Typhoon Basyang Hits Metro Manila

Typhoon "Basyang" internationally known as Typhoon Conson, may not have brought down dreadful rains like Typhoon Ketsana but the typhoon hit the country with its powerful and heavy winds Tuesday-July 13 leaving at least 20 people killed and 57 missing, officials said- Wednesday.

"Basyang", which was first forecast to hit Central Luzon, hit Metro Manila instead. The typhoon sent trees and billboards crashing down on power lines, and caused a major Blackout. Power supply in whole Metro Manila and nearby areas was out for more than 24 hours because of typhoon "Basyang".

It was the first natural disaster faced, managed and handled by the fresh Aquino administration. The The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said that the estimated cost of damage to infrastructure, agriculture and schools reached P23.696 million in Regions 4-A, 4-B, 5 and the National Capital Region.
