Aasia Bibi approaches LHC

Shahbaz Bhatti (Federal Minister for Minority Affairs) said that Aasia’s lawyer has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court against the session court decision sentencing her to death. However, the court has not yet fixed a hearing date. He also said that the government will not allow the misuse of blasphemy law. Moreover, blasphemy law against Aasia Bibi is baseless as the complainant & major witnesses were not present at the site of incident. A report has been submitted to Zardari in which he had recommended that Aasia Bibi must be pardoned.

These are very sensitive cases, so one can’t even say it’s good news. But in my previous write-up on infamous laws I pointed out that it’s difficult to prove the case due to lack of evidence in High Court. Session court is a different story. But many a time, the victims are killed by lunatics in this country. There is already a lot of pressure on Zardari & he may take the step.
