Talking to PU vice-chancellor Sudeepto Adhikari, a delegation of Purta led by its president, B V N Sinha, and general secretary S K Ganguli, demanded immediate end of discrimination against the retired teachers. It is good that the university has started making payment of revised salaries to the working teachers and employees with effect from January this year by mobilizing its internal resources, but the same benefit has not been extended to the retired teachers of the university as yet, the delegation pointed out.
The delegation reminded the VC that in the light of rule 16 of Patna University Retirement Benefits Statute, the university had rightly revised pension/family pension in February last with effect from January, 2006. The statute provides revision of pension of the university retirees from the same date and at the same rate as given to the state government pensioners who are already getting revised pension.
Recently, the Patna High Court, while disposing of a number of writ petitions filed by retired teachers of different universities, including PU, had ordered the government and the universities to pay revised pension to the retired teachers. Besides, on several occasions the HRD minister had assured the retired teachers that revised pension would be made available to them shortly, but nothing has been done in this regard so far.
The VC said that he would take up the issue with the state government to end the discrimination against the retired teachers in matter of payment of pension. He hoped that their genuine demand would be conceded by the first week of July.
