Inhuman traditions

Not even a day goes by when we don’t hear or read about embarrassing & depressing stories. I call them embarrassing, because these shameless incidents happen in our own country.

Today I read this report about a 10 year old girl child who has been a victim of these strange wadera traditions. Countless girls of her age are being married off to much older men in interior Sindh. Just a year ago, one of her cousins requested for her hand in marriage. The father kept on turning down this proposal, as the cousin happens to be around 30 (the same age as that of the father).

The cousin also tried to abduct the girl & in the process, he shot & injured the mother. Right now this family is in Karachi, but they fear that anytime their little girl could be abducted. The police too have not registered any case, as the rival party is quite influential. We live in a country where if we are not influential, we can’t even register FIR. Which reminds me that 3, 4 years ago, they were talking about FIR at your doorstep…I wonder who comes up with such marvelous ideas that are never being practiced.

Anyway, in most of the cases, we know that parents are willing to marry off their little girls to aged men. In this one, both the parents do not approve of this hideous custom. However, it seems that pedophiles have a legalized way of having things in these areas & even parents don’t mind. This is nothing but criminal mentality when you let all sorts of wrong things happen without being ashamed of anything at all.

And the sad part is that nothing will ever change. The number of victims will keep on increasing. We are indeed a very illiterate nation. Once a friend of mine told me that her cousins & relatives pray to have just sons; they think that daughters can never have decent lives here.

Daughters suffer even in their own homes…forget about how others treat them & abuse or harass them whenever they can. And they have the audacity to say: larki tou ghar ki izzat hai. But the fact is…she is not human. Things aren’t very different in educated families.
