Debbie Reynolds closed a door on Saturday as she put pieces of her Hollywood memorabilia collection up for auction because of bankruptcy, effectively ending her dream of housing the costumes and props in her own museum. But hopefully the success of the window she opened, an auction presented by Profiles in History, should be enough to comfort her.
The iconic subway grate dress Marilyn Monroe wore in “The Seven Year Itch,” which the actress said she bought for $200, sold for $4.6 million, according to Reuters. Other items that sold for way over their expected price include a dress and a pair of ruby slippers Judy Garland wore in a “Wizard of Oz” screen test ($1.75 million), another Monroe dress from “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” ($1.2 million) and the Ascot dress Audrey Hepburn donned in “My Fair Lady” ($3.7 million).
