Email Thom Gibbs with your thoughts, as we all get giddy with the thought that Andy Murray could win his first grand slam.
16:06: Schiavone breaks and is serving for the first set.
15:57: Gael Monfils is through, beating Matthias Bachinger and managing to throw his racket into the front row at one point. It was expertly caught by an amused specator. There will be no lawsuits here, it's just not tennis.
15:55: Still on serve in Schiavone v Dokic, it's now 3-3 in the first set.
15:39: Schiavone and Dokic both hold serve at the beginning of their game on a half-full Centre Court.
15:33: Here is every single result from Wimbledon so far today, with seedings in handy square brackets:
15:19: Rafael Nadal after his first round victory: "It's a very very big emotion to come back to this beautiful court. I stayed up until one o'clock last night watching the fantastic victory of Rory McIllroy. He did unbelievable, impossible to do what he did in the last four days." Staying up til one, eh, Rafael? Complacent, much?
15:15: Spare a thought for retired Aussie Mark Philippoussis. "It's Wimbledon time! I have to admit it's hard for me to watch because I miss that event so much..."
15:12; Russell challenges a call for the first time in the match, and is proved right, Nadal's serve was just into the wrong service box. It only delays the inevitable, Nadal is through, despite some brave resistance from the American Russell..
15:11: Two match points for Nadal.
15:09: Nadal is serving for the match. Vera Zvonareva is through, beating Alison Riske 6-0 3-6 6-3.
15:05: Russell is on serve, 5-1 down in the fifth set. Rainer Schuettler has posted a suitably excited Facebook update: "Hi Friends!!! Obviously I'm in a great mood...definitely a nice way to start my tournament here at Wimbledon :) The final score was 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 against Belluci. I'm feeling confident and excited to be here...hoping to keep it going. Thanks for the support and cheering me from all over the world."
15:00: Another double break for Nadal, he's 4-1 up now. Put a fork in this one, it's done.
4:56: Victoria Ward clarifies Venus Williams' unusual outfit: "In her post-match press conference, Venus Williams described her unusual get up as a "jumper" which is apparently "very now". She said she's very into zippers. That explains it, then." What do you make of it?
14:55: Nadal is showing ominous form here. He's 3-1 up and firmly into his stride.
14:52: A mild upset to report, the first of the tournament I believe. Germany's Rainer Schuettler has beaten 30th seed Thomaz Bellucciin straight sets: 7-6 6-4 6-2.
14:46: Boris Becker laughs far too heartily at his own joke, after comedian Noel Fielding is spotted in the crowd: "Now the man in the middle, that's not a girl, that's a man, right? A-heh-heh-heh." Ah, that famous German wit.
14:45: Nadal breaks in the first game of the third set. I'd give this one less than 20 minutes.
14:38: Nadal comfortable takes the second set 6-2. He's only ever lost a game once from two sets up, that was against Roger Federer. Michael Russell is not Roger Federer.
14:34: Very tight on No. 1 Court - 2-2 in the final set between Riske andZvonareva. Gael Monfils is a break and a set up against MatthiasBachinger on No. 2 Court. Nadal is serving for the set on Centre.
14:30: Lovely stuff from Russell, who gets on the end of two Nadal smashes with a lob, then a well-placed backhand before racing to the net to dink the ball unlpayably short. He's still a break down, but the score is now 4-2 to Nadal. British hopeful Emily Webley-Smithpromises something exciting tomorrow: "Just a little thankyou to liz earle for creating the perfect patch for my dress.look out for it tomorrow..." Perhaps it will be an ironic purple patch, a nod to the stagnant state of women's tennis in this country.
14:26: We're into a third set on Court Number One, Riske has beatenZvonareva 6-3 in the second set.
14:23: So unlucky, Russell! A superb dive puts the ball in a tricky position for Nadal but he digs out a superb return. Russell dives spectacularly again but his backhand is into the net. That's two breaks in a row for Nadal now, he leads 4-1.
14:21: Russell wins a fantastic 31-stroke rally after Nadal puts a deep shot slightly too long. "Out" says the line judge, quite correctly. The American journeyman (copyright every single English newspaper, this morning) isn't going down without a fight. He's played a few shots which belie his ranking of 91, but has showed admirable resolve and a lack of intimidation.
14:20: Capacity on Centre Court is up by eight seats this year. Can anybody explain how or why this has happened? Is the British public getting slimmer, allowing for a small but telling narrowing of seats?
14:15: Nadal breaks to make it 2-1 in the second set.
14:05: Milos Raonic, the highly-rated Canadian youngster is through with a 6-3 7-6 6-3 win over lucky loser Marc Gicquel. Well done, Milos. Alison Riske has rallied to lead 4-2 in the second set against Vera Zvonareva after losing the first 6-0. The second set is underway on centre court.
14:00: Nadal wins the first love game of the match and takes the set 6-4, after being 2-4 down. The procession begins.
13:57: Russell duly presents Nadal with the break point, the Spaniard will serve for the set.
13:55: I'd like to point out that my liveblogging predecessor Emily did not, in fact, have "a McEnroe-style tantrum and default on this liveblog" as per my first update of the afternoon. That was, in fact, a joke. It was just time for me to take over. You can stop emailing her now. Thanks. Russell double-faults twice in a row to give Nadal a break point.
13:50: Paul Kelso is celeb spotting: "Royal Box: Clive Woodward joins Jackie Stewart, Terry Wogan & FA gen sec Alex Horne. Expect FIA, LTA and Radio 2 to be in turmoil by close."
13:45: Nadal double-faults to give Russell a break, but breaks straight back to bring the game back on serve. Russell attempted a Beckeresque dive during the last game. It was on the baseline rather than at the net, suggesting he hasn't studied his Best of Becker video carefully enough.
13:36: Nadal not showing much of his customary sparkle so far. He's 3-2 down, we're still on serve after a straightforward game for Russell.
13:26: Rusell also holds from a break point down, it's 2-1 to the American in the first set. Elsewhere, last year's beaten finalist Vera Zvonareva is 4-0 up in the first set against Alison Riske on court number one, and Venus Williams has won her match 6-3 6-1. She'll play Date-Krumm in the next round.
13:23: Russell has a break point, but Nadal brings it back to deuce with an emphatic diagonal shot at the net. Nadal holds serve, 1-1 in the first set.
13:20: Another slightly depressing stat, this time from the officialWimbledon Twitter page: "Kimiko Date-Krumm 3rd oldest woman to win a match at Wimbledon behind Mrs AE O'Neill and Martina Navratilova"
13:14: Mark Hodgkinson on the pressing issue of the day: "Much debate on Court Two as to how you would describe what Venus Williams is wearing - some are saying a cut-off toga, others are going for hot pants and a floaty top. Her opponent has gone for a regular T-shirt, and a pair of shorts." We're underway on centre, Russell to serve first. It's 15-15.
13:10: Paul Kelso with a slightly depressing observation: "First completed match of #wimbledon2011 sees a Brit lose, sorry, crash, out. Katie O'Brien goes down 0-6 5-7 to K Date-Krumm."
13:06: We have our first British victim of the tournament. Kimiko Date Krumm (40 years of age, remember) has just beated Katie O'Brien 6-0, 7-5. There's always next year. Michael Russell and Rafael Nadal are knocking up on centre court.
13:03: The champion is out on centre court, running through his familiarly boxeresque warm-up routine. John McEnroe has had his first strop of the tournament. Rafael Nadal is too modest, apparently: "I'm getting a little bit tired of him continuing to downplay his chances," McEnroe told the BBC. "There is definitely an argument for him not only being the best player at the moment, but the greatest of all time. Rafa has won things like the Davis Cup and an Olympic gold medal (in singles) that Roger Federer hasn't, and he is right on his tail in terms of Grand Slam titles too - so why can't he just say 'look, I'm the best'?"
13:00: Katie O'Brien has broken back! Come on, England. 5-5 in the second set on Court number three. Boris Becker is talking about Rudyard Kipling's poem "If", saying "it gets you through most difficult moments". Perhaps he should be on hand with photocopies for all this week's British losers?
12:55: Venus takes the first set 6-3. Some excellent tennis being played by Amanmurad, but Williams looks like she means business. It's been a better second set for Katie O'Brien, but Date-Krumm is 5-4 up in the second set and about to serve for the match.
12:48: Victoria Ward, one of a small army of Telegraph staff inside the SW19 postcode today, reports on a positive start to the tournament: "Mood certainly buoyant as the rain is (so far) holding off. Celeb spotting has begun in earnest with Michael McIntyre accosted by a couple of female fans although Pippa Middleton is the star prize with rumours swirling about whether she will or will not make an appearance"
12:42: Afternoon, it's Thom Gibbs checking in after Emily had a McEnroe-style tantrum and defaulted on this liveblog. Venus is 4-1 up now, but Amanmurad isn't making life easy for her.
Greg Rusedski: "At Wimby, doing monfils and roddick today. both will win. Nadal, Murray going to win easy as well. Weather holding up. no rain please?"
12:35 Venus is 3-1 up on Court No 2, the grunts are deafening and the dress! It's not a dress it's an all-in-one body suit. White, elegant and very understated for the American, not a fan of the gold zip up the front....
12:31 It's not getting much better for O'Brien in the second set, Brendan Gallagher tells me she's just been broken and is 2-1 down with only 26 minutes gone....
Here's what Venus Williams has had to say about her return: "I've missed everything about playing. It's hard to keep challenging myself but I do feel i have a lot more great tennis left in me. I feel I can do more and that's what it's all about at this point. For me it's a true love for the game and knowing I have this much more to give. I can't just stop knowing that. It's about adding more to my resume. I never thought I'd reached the end but i never thought I'd miss out for this long.
Weather watch: the latest reports indicate we should get a full afternoon of play at SW19, rain likely to hold off until 7pm. After two awesome years of sun I bet the organisers are champing at the bit to get their money's worth out of Centre Court's roof.
Brendan Gallagher: "First set to Date 6-0 in 16 mins. First record for new court 3?"
12:22 Am looking forward to seeing a bit of Venus Williams in action. Her match against Akgul Amanmuradova on Court No 2 is about to get underway. The 31-year-old's return to tennis has been hugely over shadowed by her sister Serena's but after a wobbly start in Eastbourne last week, Venus was looking good I thought. It'll be a little tougher than normal for her this year with her absence since the Australian Open resulting in her being only the 24th seed in the women's singles draw. And as ever with the Williams sisters I'm looking forward to seeing their outfits...they were tame at Eastbourne but I'm sure they'll be wowing us this year.
12:17...O'Brien now 5-0 down...that's taken just 13 minutes
12:15 Let's hope there's no replay of last year when it comes to Brit watch this afternoon...12 months ago all six female players failed to win their opening matches. We know that there will be a minimum of one casualty this afternoon as compatriots Naomi Broady v Anne Keothavong meet on Court no 12 but it's not been a great start for Katie O'Brien on the all new Court No 3 she's 4-0 love down against Date....
Brendan Gallagher: "Already missing Tony Adamson's announcements at Wimbledon. He was like the guy announcing the day's entertainment at Butlin's.#wimbledon2011"
Good afternoon ladies and gents and welcome to the first of Telegraph Sport's Wimbledon live blogs for the 2011 Championships. Excited? You should be, quite a line-up at SW19 this afternoon and we'll be bringing you all the news, gossip and scores throughout the afternoon.
My sources down at the championships inform me Murraymania is not disappointing this year. The fanatics are out in forces, the champagne corks are popping all over Murray mound in anticipation of the Brit's opening match later this afternoon against Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Before they entertain us, defending champion and world No 1 Rafael Nadal will open proceedings on Centre Court against Michael Russell of the United States. The Spaniard is bidding to equal Bjorn Borg's record of completing the Roland Garros-Wimbledon double three times.
Sandwiched in between those two tasty looking ties, is Francesca Schiavone. The Italian, seeded sixth for this year's championships is up against Jelena Dokic who let's face it has not enjoyed a hugely successful run at Wimbledon for quite some years.
Telegraph Sport's Paul Kelso: "It's the little traditions that make #wimbledon special: the touts on W'don Park Rd, the security men watching them, and a large grey cloud."
So besides the three big names on Centre Court this afternoon, here are a few more matches of interest on day one:
Andreas Beck (Ger) v (8) Andy Roddick (USA) (third on Court No 1)
Akgul Amanmuradova (Uzb) v (23) Venus Williams (first on Court No 2)
Radek Stepanek (Cze) v (21) Fernando Verdasco (Spa) (fourth on Court No 2)
Full order of play
Brit watch:
Katie O'Brien (Gbr) v Kimiko Date Krumm (Jpn) (first on Court No 3)
Naomi Broady (Gbr) v Anne Keothavong (Gbr) (fourth on Court no 12)
Sergiy Stakhovsky (Ukr) v Daniel Cox (Gbr) (third on Court No 14)
