Valedictorian

NTU valedicatorian Trinetta Chong has been rapped by her school for using the ‘F’ word during the closing speech of her convocation which stunned many in the audience.
Ms Trinetta Chong, 23, who graduated from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, used the F-word after delivering a rousing speech on behalf of her cohort that had the auditorium cheering. She then congratulated her peers and added: ‘We f***ing did it!’
In a statement last night, an NTU spokesman said Ms Chong’s inappropriate choice of words was regrettable, but added that ‘graduands at Ceremony 14 were in extremely high spirits on Friday evening’.
‘There was a lot of clapping and cheering throughout the ceremony, so by the time the valedictorian Trinetta delivered her speech, the audience was in a highly charged mood. In that environment, she probably got carried away.’
The spokesman added that she has since apologised to Wee Kim Wee School Chair, Associate Professor Benjamin Hill Detenber, both in person and in writing. Ms Chong is currently working in a statutory board.

CBSE

In view of the Union health ministry giving its nod and the Centre making the requisite amendments in “Regulations on Graduate Medical Education” as well as Post-Graduate Medical Education, a “common core syllabus” is being prepared for MBBS admissions on the basis of the syllabi of the school boards of different states, the MCI’s counsel stated.
The MCI decided to introduce the common NEET as per the proposal put forth during the national-level meeting of deans, principals, directors of various colleges and institutions, which was hosted by the government to examine the issue on March 29.
This was followed by another meeting of the Board of Governors of MCI and officials of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to finalise the modalities for NEET for MBBS admissions to be conducted by the CBSE.
“In a further meeting on July 18, it was decided to make the core syllabus of the NEET under-graduate admissions available on the MCI website for feedback from the relevant stakeholders,” the MCI note stated.
The pattern of the examination, distribution of questions across different MBBS subjects and model questions would be made available on the MCI website from August for the benefit of students.
The CBSE has also been given the responsibility of preparing the MBBS question papers.
“Regarding the common NEET for post-graduate (MD/MS) admissions across the country, the modalities are being worked out. The examination is schedule for next January-February for the academic year 2012-13,” the MCI note said.
Taking note of recent paper leaks, the MCI said, “CBSE has indicated that for security reasons, the question paper will be only in English and Hindi.”

CAT 2011

Indian Institutes of Management announced the highlights of the Common Admission Test 2011 (CAT 2011). Prometric, trusted provider of market-leading test development and test delivery solutions, is IIMs’ partner in developing and delivering CAT 2011.

The CAT 2011 will have only two sections instead of three. The first section will focus on Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation; the second on Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning. These two sections will be implemented sequentially with separate time limits. The examination will be 140 minutes. Candidates will have 70 minutes to answer 30 questions within each section which will have an on-screen countdown timer. Once the time ends for the first section, they will move to the second and will no longer be able to go back. Although new in the computer-based version of CAT, this format was previously practiced in some of the earlier paper-and-pencil years.

A 15-minute tutorial will be provided before the start of the test, and candidates are advised to go through that carefully before starting the main examination. The total duration will be two hours and 35 minutes including the tutorial. A practice test to provide candidates with a feel of the timed sections, as well as navigation and functionality of the actual test will be made available in the coming weeks. Once again candidates are advised to go though them carefully to familiarize themselves with the screens, layout, and navigation.
The number of test days has been retained at 20 days within the window from 22 October to 18 November 2011. This would provide candidates with the flexibility of choosing a suitable test day based on their convenience.  For those candidates who are differently abled, additional support will be provided as required.

“We are confident that CAT 2011 is going to help us in identifying the appropriate candidates for our programmes, and that the examination will be fair and equitable,” Said Professor Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 Convenor.  “Considerable effort has been invested in maintaining similar level of difficulty across papers. A small number of statistically and psychometrically validated questions are randomly inserted in each question paper as equating blocks. These will be used for assessing post test equality across the days.”

IIMs and Prometric have reviewed the operational processes and contingent on the continued punctuality of candidates, the check-in procedure this year will start one-and-a-half hours before the scheduled test time instead of the previous two hours. With this change, we are also able to have an earlier start time of 3:15pm for the afternoon session.

To offer convenience to more candidates, three new cities – Bhilai, Jammu and Dehradun – have been added to the previous 33 test locations. This will help in bringing CAT closer to the northern states of the country.  To reduce the difficulties in purchasing CAT vouchers, now candidates will also be able to purchase CAT vouchers from 201 Axis Bank branches, an increase of 30 outlets.
A video on the conversion of CAT to a computer-based test and candidate impressions of this transition will be available on YouTube by the end of this week.

With the process of locking of choices ending at 5pm on June 23, the CCB is all set to announce the first round of allotment to engineering/ architecture stream, latest by 10am on Saturday.

When the deadline for locking of choices ended, a total of 2,12,616 candidates had registered online. These include 1,69,384 male candidates and 43,232 women candidates. Students in the open category accounted for 1,12,010 candidates followed by 54,841 candidates in OBC category, 33,399 SCs, 12,366 STs, and 1,458 physically handicapped students. The total number of choices filled by these candidates across institutions and branches was 1.44 crore.

Candidates from Karnataka too were not far behind with 4,344 students registering in the online counselling process. These included 2,618 in open category, 911 OBC, 556 SCs, 259 STs, and 22 physically handicapped. In all, 3,222 boys, and 1,122 girls from Karnataka registered online. If one takes the case of NITK, a total of 740 seats across branches are available and 50% of these seats are for students from the state, CCB coordinator G Srinikethan told TOI here.

These 2.12 lakh students are vying for 18,411 seats available in 30 NITs, 5 IIITs, and 13 centrally, and state funded institutions for which the initial rounds of seat allotment will be conducted. Westwood Secondary School

Westwood High School is ending its 2010-2011 school year on a high note.
As students complete their final exams and embark on summer vacation today, administrators are basking in the results of a recent national ranking that placed Westwood High School among the Top 10 High Schools in Massachusetts.
The school ranked fifth in the state and 134th in the nation on Newsweek's annual "America's Best High Schools 2011" list.
"It's really exciting," said Westwood Superintendent John Antonucci. "It's a great validation of our work."
The list ranked 500 high schools throughout the country based on a study of more than 1,000.
For Massachusetts, the following were among the Top 10 high schools:
    1. Boston Latin School - Boston
    2. Hopkinton High Shcool
    3. Belmont High School
    4. Mystic Valley Regional High School - Malden
    5. Westwood High School
    6. Manchester Essex Regional High School - Manchester by the Sea
    7. Longmeadow High School
    8. Sturgis Charter High School - Hyannis
    9. Tahanto Regional High School - Boylston
    10. Sandwich High School - East Sandwich
Newsweek, which in the past focused its rankings on AP tests taken per graduate, changed things up a bit this year, now using a group of experts to come up with a list that better reflects a school's success for turning out college-prepared students.
Westwood High School Principal Emily Parks - who, as of July 1, will take on the role of Westwood'sAssistant Superintendent (Sean Bevan, currently the assistant principal at the high school, will fill the lead role that same day) - reiterated Antonucci's comments.
"I think we're doing really good work here, and I'm really proud of our faculty and our students, and it's always great to have some recognition of that," Parks said.
This isn't the first time Westwood has been named on a list that recognizes various achievements.
The school system ranked fourth among the Top 10 Best Small City Public School Systems in the country last year by GreatSchools, a website providing information on more than 200,000 public and private schools in the United States.
As for a Newsweek's rankings, Antonucci and Parks said they can't recall for certain whether Westwood has made such a list in the past.
Parks did say that earlier this year she submitted various amounts of data to Newsweek for the ranking, which included Westwood's student-to-teacher ratio (12.5), graduation rate (99 percent), college bound students (96 percent), and average SAT score (1756).
"It's pretty solid data, and in my opinion, its a proper measure of school rankings," Antonucci said.
As for why he thinks Westwood made the list, Antonucci said an effort to strengthen the system's SAT scores over the years may have contributed, as more students have been able to attend ChytenEducational Services at a discounted rate through a partnership with the schools.
"I would point to that decision as something that's really very pointedly driven our SAT scores up," Antonucci said.
But he also noted the number of students the high school sends to college.
"Westwood is in fact a college preparatory school," he said, "and our program is geared towards ensuring that a high percentage of students end up going to college."
A poll taken for the 2008-2009 school year by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education showed that almost 50 public schools in Massachusetts had at least 80 percent of their high school grads move on to four year colleges, and more than 20 of those schools had more than 90 percent going on to do the same. Westwood was among those 20.
"That's not an accident," Antonucci said. "Our program is as rigorous as any high school in the Commonwealth. When you see scores and rankings like (in Newsweek), it's a validation. It's based on the kind of hard work and effort on making that happen."
Adding to that, Westwood School Committee Chairperson Brian Kelly said Westwood's success is due to three factors.
Editor's Note: Due to a reporting error, the above paragraph originally stated that Brian Kelly is the Vice Chairperson of the Westwood School Committee. He is actually the Committee's Chair.
"We have a rigorous curriculum, we have excellent teachers, and we have motivated students with parents who care about education," Kelly said.
He added, "This (ranking) is certainly outstanding. We have an outstanding school system, and it's nice to receive well-deserved recognition."
Parks agreed, but added that while the rankings are solid in their quantitative statistics, the one thing the list doesn't reveal is qualitative data. She said the culture of Westwood High School is certainly a crucial part of a student's experience.
"While I'm always pleased to see this recognition and ranking, what I realize is they don't take into account the qualitative stuff, the kind of culture in the school," Parks said. "That stuff is harder to measure, and adds quality to the experience that we have here."

It should be noted that there is a very heavy traffic load early on these sites due to many students anxiously checking for their scores.

There was a bit of controversy involving BPUT which was reported over a week ago as students alleged there had been an inordinate delay in conducting their exams. Students in plastic engineering were affected in particular. Students were suggesting their careers may have been compromised because they could only complete the 1st semester during the past 2 years. The delay made it difficult for them to complete course work in the normal amount of time.

It should be noted that BPUT's Exam results page has a disclaimer at the bottom of the page to protect themselves from any BPUT exam results that may have been reported in error. It's noted that there could be mistakes in terms of scores reported, so students may want to double check with the university or department to be sure they are seeing the proper mark.

    College Board

The Casper College board of trustees reauthorized two property tax levies, designated an honorary name for a theater building and approved an updated college strategic plan during Tuesday night’s regular meeting.
The college has authorized an optional 1-mill levy since 1991 to pay personnel and general operating costs. The mill is projected to bring $1.3 million to the college.
The second, a half-mill levy, supports the Central Wyoming Board of Cooperative Education Services, or the BOCES program.
Neither levy will increase taxes for residents. Both were unanimously approved after a public comment portion of the meeting at which no one spoke in favor of or against the levies.
Trustees praised the success of the BOCES program, which creates education opportunities by pairing the college with the Natrona County School District.
“There have been a number of innovative programs that have resulted from this mill levy that are so worthwhile to our schools, both high school and college level,” said trustee Bill Hambrick. “It’s something we can take great pride in.”
Hambrick also spoke in favor of renaming the college’s Black Box Theatre for former theater director Tom Empey. The board names buildings after people who have given “distinguished service” or substantial monetary gifts, according to a new policy approved by the board last year.
Empey created the college’s theater department and taught for 31 years at the college. The board unanimously approved the naming.
“The theater is not just recognized in this area — it’s recognized regionally, and Tom is responsible for so much of that,” Hambrick said.
Trustees also approved a strategic plan built from the college’s plan drafted in 2008 and aligned with goals released by the Wyoming Community College Commission in 2010.
The plan sets goals for the college, such as forming a diversity committee, working more with the Casper business incubator and creating a campus-wide technology plan. A study earlier this year revealed deficiencies and below-average spending on the college’s technology.
The plan also prioritizes building a new early childhood learning center in addition to finishing the Gateway Building and residence halls and starting construction on a music building and the University of Wyoming/Casper College Center and college student union.
