Dog owners warned over killer worm

Dog owners warned over killer worm

Animal experts are warning dog owners to learn how to spot the tell-tale signs of a killer parasite which is spreading at an "alarming rate" around the UK.

Lungworm, a potentially fatal infection for dogs, has become increasingly diagnosed by vets, the Be Lungworm Aware campaign has warned.
A spokesman said 37 per cent of vets in the UK have diagnosed at least one case of the parasite in 2010 compared to only 16 per cent in 2008.
Vet Luke Gamble said: "Once a problem seen only in isolated areas, lungworm is spreading at an alarming rate in the UK.
"While dog owners are becoming more aware of lungworm, there is still a real lack of understanding as to the warning signs associated with the condition and how to prevent or treat it."
Dogs become infected with lungworm after eating common garden slugs and snails carrying the larvae. A spokesman for the campaign said an infected dog may have breathing difficulties, be lethargic and cough. Other signs include weight loss, fits, reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, paralysis and persistent bleeding from minor cuts.
Sarah Wright, editor of Your Dog magazine, said: "While lungworm poses a real risk to all dogs, it can be easily treated if caught early enough and with new advances in veterinary medicine, even prevented.
"With the increasing number of reported incidents, it is more important than ever before that owners are aware of the signs to look out for."

Please help Buca find a loving home

Buca is a sweet little puppy. She is approximately 5 months old. She is a very sweet, loving dog and she loves people, particularly kids. But she’s all alone in the street & she’s just too little to be there and she desperately needs a good home. She’s been fed every day, but we need to find someone who could adopt her. You could see for yourself she’s such a cute, lovable baby.

For more info on Buca, please contact Irma & this is her email address: irma_99_@hotmail.com

Hachiko – the hero dog

After watching No One Killed Jessica, somehow I couldn’t help thinking about Hachiko. This dog waited for his owner outside the railway station for 9 years. When you look at his pics, you can see so much sadness in his eyes. I cannot think of watching that movie again. It was too much to see that anguish & pain. When he couldn’t walk properly, even then he waited & waited till he died in his sleep.

People used to give him food & one of the students of his owner even wrote about him in the newspaper while Hachiko was alive. His story became popular cause of his unyielding loyalty & devotion to a dead master. He used to wait for the professor at Shibuya station to return from work, but one day the professor suffered a stroke at the university & never returned.

Anyhow, they made his monument in his lifetime. However, Hachiko’s life was indeed very sad. I did learn one thing: it’s better to see the death of our pet. It might be the biggest grief, but it’s nothing as compared to the suffering of an innocent pet. I would never want any of my pet to wait for me.

Hachiko was far better than humans who have forgotten everything about loyalty.

Cardboard houses for cats

Cats and cats like to sit and sleep in cardboard boxes, but few people want to put the ugly cardboard box in the middle of his apartment. Canadian Company Loyal Luxe, dealing with pets, came up with beautiful houses for cats. They are made from fully recycled cardboard and can become a favorite animal. There are two models: the "Canadian cabin" and "The Indian wigwam."

Love that kills

Wuthering Heights has been one of my favourite books. I have always been inspired by the love of Heathcliff. It is not just intense, but also very pure. He might be a bad guy in the book but his love is definitely genuine. Although it’s unrequited love but I still can’t say that I can relate to it. Anyway I was going through the passages that I marked & I just couldn’t help putting them on the blog. I hope you like them:

“I have not broken your heart – you have broken it; & in breaking it, you have broken mine. So much the worse for me, that I am strong. Do I want to live? What kind of living will it be when you – oh, God! Would you like to live with your soul in the grave?”

“The entire world is a dreadful collection of memoranda that she did exist, & that I have lost her.”

I have been thinking that unrequited love does a lot of damage but what about the love that is returned? What about the love that is unconditional & pure? Yeah I’m referring to the love of animals. I don’t think anything could be compared to that. It even surpasses the real meaning of love.

And when they die, they leave a hole in your heart. And there can never be a substitute for anyone. Each individual or being is unique. No one can replace anyone I suppose. And if someone can, then it’s not love. Or maybe you grow out of love.

I’m very sorry to say but it’s the kind of emotion that hurts terribly whether you feel it for humans or animals. It almost kills you when the object of your affection happens to be a pet, because they aren’t selfish. They love regardless of your flaws that are prominent to the world

Sasha – my new cat

How I met my new cat makes for one romantic story. We have named her Sasha. Actually it’s the name of Z’s virtual pet in the Pirates. And we are mostly running short of names. And Sasha sounds cool. Although my mom wanted to name her Kajol as she is chocolate brown.

This cat is around 9 or 10 months. I promised my mom that I would not pick up any kitten & I guess I kept my promise :P This time I brought home an adult cat. Actually Z & I were going to the beauty parlor & we even had a fight as I didn’t want to go. On the way, I saw Sasha & I was like…I must pet this cat. When I petted her, she gave me her heart in a fraction of a second. She started walking with us & that was dreadful, cause people drive like mad.

It was at that moment I decided that I must bring this cat home & Ammi could give her food & she could stay outside. Z was quite mad at my crazy idea. Anyway, I brought her home. She was scared, so I put her inside the house. When I came back, it became Sasha’s home.

Everyone is quite fond of Sasha as she’s very friendly & sweet. What I find romantic about this story is the part where she gave me her heart. When someone does that, it’s extremely difficult to leave that being. Anyhow, I’m glad that mad people still do mad things. Forgive me for using the word that is used by everyone.
