Want to buy a bra that protects your health as well as cleavage? Women will soon be able to buy a “smart bra” that is able to detect early-stage breast cancer. Recent innovations in the science of thermography and its use in detecting breast cancer may lead to apparel items such as bras being used as a early-warning signal.

This smart bra was invented by Dr. Elias Siores, Ph.D., who holds the position of Director at the Centre for Research and Innovation at the University of Bolton in the United Kingdom. So how does it work? The bra uses a microwave antennae system integrated into the fabric of the bra, which detects abnormalities such as temperature changes in breasts.

Temperature changes represent increased blood flow which may indicated the development of tumors related to breast cancer. As these tumors grow, there is a higher demand for blood flow, which would then alert the user via the bra. The bra would then warn the user to seek medical consultation.

Work still needs to be done to increase the accuracy of the device, as there are many reasons for an increase in blood flow. However, Dr. Siores believes this technology is viable and is currently working to increase the sensitivity of the new technology in order to better distinguish tumor development from more benign reasons. I have no doubt this technology would be extremely popular and beneficial to women.

Breast cancer trial: New drug lowers risk for at-risk patients

  • 65%decreased risk after taking hormone-blocking pill source

» A huge step forward: The study, which involved 4,500 people, represents progress towards a safe-to-take drug that prevents breast cancer in at-risk patients. While anti-estrogen drugs already exist on the market, they’ve had pretty horrific side effects that discourage their use. So far, aromatase inhibitors don’t have any of these side effects — but it’s important to note that there haven’t been long-term studies with this, either. (This is the first time researchers tested an aromatase inhibitor tested clinically.) However, it’s still encouraging and worth keeping an eye on.

Drug That Treats Breast Cancer Found To Prevent It, Study Shows

Drug That Treats Breast Cancer Found To Prevent It, Study Shows:

Women who are at high risk for breast cancer that is fueled by the hormone estrogen could reduce their risk of getting cancer by taking the hormone-blocking drug Aromasin, according to a study presented at a conference in Chicago on Saturday.

“We proved that exemestane (Aromasin) reduced the risk of invasive breast cancer by 65%,” said lead author Dr. Paul Goss, who is a breast cancer specialist at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital. Goss presented his research at the annual conference of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The study has also been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Pfizer, the maker of Aromasin, announced in May that the U.S. patent for this drug had expired, making it eligible for generic drug manufacturers to produce and sell it.

Goss expects the price of this drug to decline quickly because of this. However, he says Pfizer would not reveal to him if they plan to ask for an extension of their patent based on this research. A spokesperson for the company, which funded some of this research, would not comment on this topic either.

'I Heart Boobies' Bracelets Are No Longer Banned

There was a bit of controversy against the breast cancer fundraising bracelets that proclaimed 'I (heart) boobies!' but the federal judge of Pennsylvania ruled these bracelets are not lewd and vulgar. Thus, they are not banned by public school officials after this ruling.

Judge Mary McLaughlin said the bracelets could be reasonably viewed as speech designed to raise awareness for breast cancer and to reduce stigma associate with openly discussing breast health.

Now the schools will not consider the bracelets to be disruptive or vulgar anymore. Earlier, two girls were suspended for defying a ban on wearing the bracelets in their school during the Breast Cancer Awareness Day.

School management felt that the slogan itself was overtly sexual and had a double meaning. They said because of the bracelet's inappropriate slogan two boys tried to touch girls on their breasts.

However, with the ruling the victory lies in the hands of speech advocates. It is a lighthearted way to raise awareness of breast health. What better way to reach out to the youth if they could relate with the slogans for such a brilliant cause.

Jennifer Aniston along with Demi Moore is Directing A Lifetime Movie

Jennifer, along with Patty Jenkins, Alicia Keys, and Demi Moore, is directing a short film for Lifetime network. It’s going to be a 5-part anthology of short films solely devoted to breast cancer. It’s a part of a series called Project Five. Which means all these 5 ladies will be creating & directing individual short films to explore the impact of breast cancer on people’s lives. I think it’s a worthy cause & a commendable attempt on the part of these ladies. However, the fifth woman is not yet decided.

Here’s Jennifer’s statement about it:

“Our hope with Project Five is to entertain, inform and inspire dialogue, research and prevention. Otherwise, our goals are small,” Aniston, 42, tells UsMagazine.com in a statement. “We want these films to move people and empower those affected by breast cancer to stand tall through this challenge, which impacts all of our lives, no matter who we are.”

Lifetime president Nancy Dubuc said she is thrilled to provide a platform for the group of women.

"I'm a big fan of this amazing group of powerful and creative women, and we are thrilled to be working with them on 'Project Five'. It's an awesome feeling to be able to give them such a strong platform to do what they do best - entertain and tell great stories - so that we all educate viewers about breast cancer through these five films of courage, love and hope".

Deemi Moore produced & starred in a similar kind of project which explored the subject of abortion in 1996.
