““The reason that men can rape children and walk around, the reason that they (children) can go missing and they gang-rape them and abuse them, is because there is a kind of unwritten law in society [Jamaica] that it doesn’t matter, nothing will happen to you the (offender), most of our laws aren’t enforced anyway. There is a sense in this society that we don’t value children,” said Blaine.”Elephant Man to debut in Zimbabwe - June 24:@eledienergygod will perform for first time in Zimbabwe on June 24. OCHO RIOS, St Ann — Approximately 300 Jamaicans living in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada and other parts of the world are expected to participate in the fourth biennial Jamaica Diaspora Convention which begins today in Ocho Rios, St Ann today.
They are expected to join about 200 locals at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort and Conference Centre to hold discussions on a range of issues affecting the Diaspora and Jamaica.
Matters relating to the strengthening of the Diaspora/Jamaica partnership, building sustainable Diaspora communities through youth empowerment and partnership as well as government and the organisational structure of the Diaspora are expected to be discussed.
Discussions will also be held on issues relating to national security, crime and violence, health, challenges and opportunities within the Diaspora, Vision 2030 and the Diaspora engagement as well as Diaspora partnership and the economy.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Dr Kenneth Baugh is expected to address the official opening of the convention tomorrow. Diaspora members will also get to interface with Finance Minister Audley Shaw and Industry and Commerce Minister Karl Samuda who are expected to make presentations.
The start of the convention follows a cloud of uncertainty, which up to recently, hung over its staging and the participation of several key members of the Diaspora.
Diaspora leaders were angered by, among other things, proposals to change the way members for the Diaspora Boards are selected.
Up to yesterday, officials at the foreign affairs ministry, which has responsibility for the convention, did not release any details on the number of persons who have registered to attend the event.
Meanwhile, several key figures within the Diaspora are to be recognised by Governor General Sir Patrick Allen for their contribution towards the development of the country during an awards ceremony Friday.
