Negril Beach, Jamaica

At a time when many a Jamaican is concerned about the death of traditional art forms, the Braata Folk Singers reminded us that we can relax, as that will not be happening anytime soon.  The New York based group presented ‘Wheel an Come Again’, which could not have been a more appropriate name for only their second concert season.  The twelve member group delivered folk song after folk song with such poise and passion that it is obvious why they got their name, as they left the audience wanting more…Jus a lickle braata.

Led by the talented Andrew Clarke, who performed as a chorus member, the group walked us through classics such as “Liza”, “Sammy Dead”, “Banyan Tree” and “Love is a funny likkle ting”.  Songs such as “Betta Woman Dan Yu” and “Why Woman Grumble” had the audience in laughter.

Andrew Clarke (Director), getting into the spirit.

The stage was cleverly designed to incorporate many typical elements of Jamaican culture, such as the coal stove with the dutch pot on it, the coconut stand, and various simulations of market stalls.  The use of colour was adequate and the costuming very appropriate.

The twelve singers delivered a balanced sound, and neatly executed the choreography with great expression.  Outside of a few missed entries, the blend of voices was exceptional.  Soprano, Dianne Dixon, seemed to have the crowd in the palm of her hand with every antic and expression she shared.  Andrew Clarke featured many times with his clean tenor voice.  This was supported by an ensemble cast of church goers, and shoppers in the market, not to mention the cute Matthews sisters, Courtnae and Joelle.

The singers could not have done so well without the support of the amazing and competent band, comprising of keyboardist, Garnet Mowatt (who contributed to some of the arrangements created by Andrew Clarke), Matthew Silpot (Keyboard), Marcus Williams (Percussion), Palomin Hassad (Percussion) and the legendary, Carrot Jarrett (Percussion).

Overall I give the Braata Folk Singers an ‘A’ for a concert well done.  I definitely got my money’s worth, not to mention the complimentary food provided in the intermission, and the souvenir program provided on entry to the theatre.  I would encourage you to support this talented group as they move forward, ensuring the maintenance of our heritage in the New York/Tri-state area, and I’m certain soon to the rest of the world.  The group also has CDs and t-shirts available at a minimal cost.  Mi definitely waan braata of the Braata Folk Singers.

(The following is a response to these comments)

I don’t think the Old or New Testaments make any mention whatsoever of the “continuation of the species”. Although it’s fantastic to be so enthusiastic about Charles Darwin, one really oughtn’t confuse the two. Believe me, if Jesus had taken a break from telling everyone to be less concerned with following ancient laws, rites, and rituals and more concerned with treating everyone in the world with love and respect as fellow children of God, and just given us a quick run-down on how Earthly species diverge and evolve over time, America wouldn’t have nearly as much of a mess going on in our public schools right now.

And since I’m sure that no one would want to be so hypocritical as to make a buffet lunch of the Bible, picking and choosing only the elements that one supports one’s narrow viewpoint and ignoring all the rest, I’ll go on and throw out some other things that it makes pretty clear, such as: No Tattoos (Leviticus 19:28)… that probably includes having the rays of the sun inked around one’s belly button. And logically, tattoo parlors are also illegal, correct?; No Shellfish (Lev. 11:10)…shellfish? like conch?; this one is actually from the New Testament, but I’ll throw that one in there, anyway: No Divorce (Mark 10:8-12)…so I’m sure that divorce is illegal in your Bible-loving paradise, too, right?; going back to the Old Testament, there’s also No Hair or Beard Trimming (Lev. 19:27)…so shaving your whole head and face is right out.

Now let’s not forget that this is the same book that people used in a similar fashion of selective rationalizing to feel completely justified in enslaving countless numbers of Africans and their descendants for two centuries.

Let’s put it this way: If you’re an Orthodox Jew who daily puts forth every effort to abide as literally by the laws in the Old Testament as you humanly can, then I respect that you may hold that particular stance on male homosexuality (noting that *only* men are mentioned in Lev. 18:22). Otherwise, you’re a willfully ignorant hypocrite in the company of all those who so fervently opposed the abolition of slavery, clung to anti-miscegenation laws, and fought for segregation to stay in place.

Regardless, this is not an issue of religion or personal morals. Churches have the right to administer sacrament to whomever they choose, and deny whomever they choose. And that is something that should always remain. However, the government does not have the right to deny civil liberties to its own citizens. This is an issue of legally-protected contracts between eligible and consenting people. There is actually no pre-requisite established by the American government that I know of that requires a sexual relationship as part of the legal marriage contract.

Very slowly, state legislature by state legislature, the people in power in our government are coming to realize that there is no legitimate, legal argument against marriage equality. Because there isn’t—the only arguments against marriage equality or any human equality are based in fear, hatred, and ignorance.

Glittering water and horses.

I recently returned from a vacation in the Bahamas. It was such a beautiful and relaxing trip, which makes it difficult to get back into the swing of things.

Next up, Peru!

The Bahamas in Technicolor

and I miss it so much. Can’t wait to post pictures and make all mah followers jeal. :) Here is a preview.

Today i got a taste of what Costa Rica rain is like. My father would LOVE this. It was so loud that i could not hear the person beside me or across from me talk. It was hard to hear myself talk. Class was pretty uneventful as was most of the day. I recently found out that there is a problem with my passport. CR customs granted me 30 days to stay in CR but i’ve registered with my school to stay for 43 days (six weeks plus one day). I have to got back to the airport tomorrow to see if they will correct it. I hope so.

I’m sure that anyone one who knows the slightest bit of Spanish knows that Latin America doesn’t use the 2nd person plural form (vosotros) of verbs; only Spain does. But did you know that Costa Rica uses neither the 2nd person plural nor the 2nd person singular (tu) forms for their verbs? I haven’t decided whether that will be advantageous for me or not.

Tomorrow i have a cooking activity after class and i’ll be sure to pay attention. I’m not a cook, i’m a baker, but i happen to know a certain follower who might enjoy this a lot even if she prefers French and Asian cultures :P

Here’s where I’m going.

See you in 1.5 weeks :D

This is where i am going:
