Girlfriend of prominent Arizona CEO found dead in his California mansion

REUTERS reports that the 32-year-old girlfriend of a prominent Arizona CEO who died Wednesday was discovered hanging naked from a balcony at his California home with a rope around her neck and her hands and feet bound, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Thursday.

Authorities identified the woman as Rebecca Nalepa and said an autopsy was being performed to determine the cause of death. The sheriff's department in Coronado, Calif., said they were not yet ready to call Nalepa's death a crime or a suicide, according to the Union-Tribune.

At the time of her death, Nalepa was dating Jonah Shacknai, the founder, chairman and CEO of Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp., the manufacturer of the popular cosmetic wrinkle filler Restylane, a competitor of Botox.

Shacknai lives in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Dog’s sad saga ends with a new beginning in Arizona sanctuary

Smokey, the dog that attracted an international following for surviving a brutal beating, being run over by a car and escaping euthanasia, left Ohio on Wednesday with a Tibetan Buddhist nun for his new home at an animal sanctuary in Arizona.

Drolma is director of Tara’s Babies Animal Welfare Sanctuary, which began as a 140-acre ranch to house animals displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The sanctuary has 70 dogs.

“We’re liberating Smokey from jail,” Drolma said.

Although Smokey’s story has a happy ending, his tale is a sad one. It began after the dog was accused of biting a 2-year-old boy during Memorial Day weekend and was later severely beaten with a Louisville Slugger baseball bat and hit with a car.

The dog originally was given to Greene County Animal Control for euthanasia, which prompted a response from animal rights groups worldwide to save the dog through Facebook sites and petitions.

With the help of donations collected through Facebook and its website, the sanctuary raised about $1,400 to fence in a new yard at the ranch for Smokey, complete with a cedar dog cabin.

“This is the beginning of his new life,” Drolma said. “His arrival at the sanctuary will be the first time in four months he’s been off a leash.”

Although the sanctuary is open to adopting Smokey out eventually, Drolma said that the sanctuary was really his home.

“We take a dog in for life,” she said. “When we take a dog in, it’s their home and they are our pets.”

Vehicles - A single person is allowed to keep one vehicle with value up to 5,000 dollars, or 10,000 if debtor is maimed or crippled. A married couple is allowed to keep one vehicle each of value up to 5,000 dollars, or one vehicle for the two with a value of 10,000 dollars. Before the revisions of 2004, the limit was a value of 1,500 dollars, so the revision greatly increased the maximum value for a vehicle exemption.

Household goods - These include beds, tables, couches, TV etc. of up to 4,000 dollars value for a single person, and 8,000 dollars for a married couple.

Wedding rings - Wedding rings are exempt up to 1,000 dollars each. Though this may sound low, this is an appraisal value. For an idea how much your ring would be worth, take it down to a pawn shop to see how much you could get. You may be slightly disappointed, but at the same time you will be glad you get to keep it!

Cash - On the day that you file for bankruptcy, you can have no more than 150 dollars in the bank for a single person, 300 for a married couple. Any more than this will be seized and given to creditors.
