iPhone App Makes Facebook Friends More Like Google+ Circles

A new iPhone app will organize your Facebook friends into groups for easier sharing with select people. Created by startup Katango, the app of the same name is an easy way to make Facebook friends work more like Google Circles, the friend-organizing tool built into the search giant's new social network, Google+.

Facebook has offered friend lists and groups for a while, of course, but few users actually create them. In fact, Mark Zuckerberg said at an event last week that only five percent of Facebook users organized their friends into subsets or create specific groups. Google+, on the other hand, holds its Google Circles feature—which lets you wall off specific friends in your network from others—as its primary differentiator from Facebook.

In either case, it's up to the user to make and create the various lists, an exercise in bookkeeping that may be the reason why so few Facebook users actually use the feature. Katango aims to take away the heavy lifting of going through contacts one by one to create groups, freeing up Facebook users to just sit back and share.

"It's not at all inspired by Google+," says Katango co-founder Yoav Shoham. "It was started a year ago. I have now maybe 350 friends on Facebook, and if I want to share a piece of news about Katango or a baby picture, neither one of those is appropriate to send to everybody. If I want to focus on particular people, I have no way of doing it—at least not an easy way."

Technology is getting powerful with each passing day. It is definitely becoming an integral part of our lives. But the most affected ones are the youth and the even younger generations because they have not seen a life without technology.

An interesting study regarding the same was published by the university's International Centre for Media & the Public Agenda (ICMPA) and the Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change. This study has revealed some alarming results.

According to this study titled 'The World Unplugged' most students cannot spend a single day without media. 1000 university students were interviewed at 12 campuses from 10 countries that included UK, China and America. The students were not allowed to use laptops, cell phones, internet, social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter and were not even allowed to watch Television. They were allowed to read books and use their landline telephones.

They can never complete 24 hours straight without access to media and technology. 4 out of 5 students felt mental and physical distress, panic, confusion and isolation when they were forced to unplug from technology for one day. College students across the globe admitted that they were addicted to modern technology such as mobile phones, laptops, social networking sites (Facebook/Twitter) and even television.

Students expressed that they had cravings to use media. They had anxiety attacks and suffered from depression during the time they could not use media. One American student openly said that his craving was the same as the itching feeling of a cocaine addict.

Another revelation was that some students ended up having deeper conversations with others when they were unplugged. Only 21% of the students could feel the benefits of being unplugged.

I think the digital media has taken over...It is ruling our lives and will rule us Big Time! Obviously, the younger generations will be absolute media druggies because they have no sense of a life where there is no media but technology has made older tech savvy people quite an addict too. There is definitely no escape. The reason for the addiction could be many - isolation, comfort, solitude. There must be something that is taking away the real life out of our lives and is leading us to a virtual life.

Well I already wrote before when I saw the silly Pepsi ad that what if we end up losing against India? Will we again blame our team and curse them like the ancient routine?

I am more than happy with my team and Shahid Afridi. Let us all look back and remember that when the team went for the World Cup, all the so called critics made fun of the team that it was a 'tooti phooti' team. No body even expected them to make it to the semi finals in the first place.

In fact, I really felt for Afridi when the poor man had to apologize to his nation for not winning the match against India because he knows back home people are so emotional and sentimental.

My issue is not with the cricket team but with the nation itself who can not take a game as a game. When they win, everybody wants to take the credit on their prayers but if they will lose then it is because they have fixed the match. No other nation reacts like this...England, Australia, West Indies, New Zealand - they love cricket too immensely but no body reacts the way we do. In fact, just look at the irony that cricket is England's national game and the country has not won a single world cup as yet but their nation does not curse them.

Let us not even bring the political shit here because that too has it toll on our team quite often but it is our behavior as a nation that sucks. Very snobbish facebook and twitter updates way before the match even began were posted. People were using words like 'badlay ki pyas'. 'Munni teri badnam hai or Sheila teri jawan hai'. Along with it, the advertisers also capitalized on the over all cheapness to trigger more sentiments of hatred.

Then we lost. People started changing their green pictures on networking sites immediately. They posted their team lost on purpose. They think the match was fixed. My friends - who are now restricted to social networking sites posted 'Today cricket died'. Then they followed everybody's message and posted, 'We love Shahid Afridi and he should not say sorry'. Next they posted 'Let us all wear our green shirts to support Shahid Afridi'.

I just feel there is too much of confusion. Everybody is following each other blindly. Don't you have a friggin brain of your own. Can't you stick to what you believe. Do you believe in cricket or is it about your own individual egos?

Yes, it hurts to lose an important match. We had a great opportunity to win the world cup after 1992 but come on, get a grip and become more sane. It is more important to cherish the good times than to miserably look at the bad stuff.

I think Shahid Afridi was the most impressive dude ever this time round. His comments and conferences were amazing. He spoke like a true sportsman and has this genuineness about him. Totally cute! Loved his response!

Guy Humiliated Himself To Get A Second Chance

This is a really funny real story from Brighton. Joe Page (26 years), who is a comedian decided to humiliate himself in front of the world because he cheated on his girlfriend.

He regretted going on a date with another woman. His girlfriend, Jess Little discovered about his infidelity through Facebook. Joe wanted to apologize to Jess so he wore a sandwich board and walked through Brighton to win back his girl.

The front of the board said, “I cheated on my girlfriend. I am humiliating myself to show I am sorry.”

On the back, it said: “I love her so much. I will do anything to get her back. I am so sorry.”

He said some people thought he was an idiot; some were laughing and men couldn't believe he was doing this for a girl. One woman thought this was quite romantic.

I hope they stick together from here onward. Everyone does not get second chances so Joe should really value the girl who took her back. While of course not many men humiliate themselves for a girl to apologize for something. And Facebook is quite a dangerous place...it reveals stuff!

The good news is that Joe and Jess might have a happy ending after all because of this stunt he pulled off. He persuaded Jess to talk it out and give him a second chance. Joe revealed later on...Jess did give him a second chance but he is still sleeping on the sofa!!!

Women obsessed with their looks 'post photos on Facebook to compete for attention'

This isn’t any surprise. Researchers have discovered lately that women identify more strongly with their image and appearance than men. And such women feel better about themselves while posting pics on FB. In fact, they share more photos online.

Dr Stefanone and his team examined specific online behaviour on social network sites. They surveyed & studied 311 volunteers. They looked at the amount of time men and women spent managing profiles, the number of photos they shared, the size of their online networks and how promiscuous they were in terms of 'friending' behaviour.

But according to them, people whose self-worth is defined by family life and behaving in a morally upstanding manner 'spent less time online'. This implies that all those who share pics on FB don’t have morals & there is a huge question mark on their self-worth. 311 people are not enough. They need to carry out the survey on a much larger scale. And frankly speaking, it’s nice to hear things like promiscuous in terms of'friending' behaviour. This sounds quite judgmental.

Anyway Dr Stefanone also said: 'Although it's stereotypical and might have been predicted, it is disappointing to me that in the year 2011 so many young women continue to assert their self-worth via their physical appearance - in this case, by posting photos of themselves on Facebook as a form of advertisement…Perhaps this reflects the distorted value pegged to women's looks throughout the popular culture and in reality television.'

So what if people attach importance to looks & I don’t think it’s such a crime if you are in love with yourself. It’s just that they have to find fault in everything. It’s true that some people change their pics every now & then & even though they are not much to look at, everyone calls them hottie. And if they feel good about it, what’s the harm? I happen to know people who are quite ordinary looking but they derive pleasure whenever they see anyone who’s not much to look at. I think something is wrong with these people. Why don’t they carry out a study on it?

What I have seen is that all over the world people find fault with those who spent time on the net. They believe they don’t have lives. And what about all of us who work on the net? Does that mean we have no morals whatsoever? And just who is the fucking judge?

I change my pic quite often & I don’t think I’m competing with anyone in my circle. I believe everyone knows how he/she looks. When you have doubts & you want to hear lies, that might be a different story.

I just can’t totally agree with this study. It seems a bit judgmental to me. They had a case against such people & they bring in self-esteem & all that crap to prove their point. Although there is a possibility that some women are competing with others but that happens in real life as well. They may have complexes & so they change their pics to prove a point that they are sexy & hot. I think it has more to do with envy, jealousy & yeah some kind of competition. Anyone who is totally engrossed in his/her looks won’t have time for those who don’t know what the god-damn feeling is about. Yeah you can be vain about it but you don’t have time for others & what they are thinking & if they like your face or not. I’m so sorry to say but who gives 2 shit to those who are competing. I believe the only person you can compete with is yourself…when you start competing with others, it says a lot about your complexes. This study hasn’t elaborated on anything that was not known earlier on.

Another demented case of cyber-bullying

2 teenagers tricked a 15 year old in believing that she has an online boyfriend who later on committed suicide & they blamed the girl for this unreal death. They also created a bogus tribute page ‘RIP Jaydon Rothwell’ where 2000 people posted comments. They all were blaming this particular teenager. In fact she had been receiving threats till the police intervened & discovered that it was a bloody hoax. This happened in Britain. Had it been some other place like Pakistan, no one would ever get to know the real story.

These 2 girls had a row with the victim & they decided to create a fake account by the name of Jaydon Rothwell on FB.

However, when police checked the records of sudden deaths, it was found that no one ever existed by that name. We often hear about all kinds of cyber-bullying but this case is of course one of its kind. Those 2 girls even arranged a boy to meet that girl once. They even kissed each other & she really thought it was something special between the 2 of them. Then one day another girl scribbled a flirtatious wall on that fake Jaydon Rothwell page & naturally his gf dumped him. Very soon she got the news that Jaydon committed suicide as she dumped him. Those 2000 members were also pissed off. She received threatening calls & messages from people who believed it was true. Anyhow this hoax began in December & lasted for 3 months.

According to the bogus tribute page, Jaydon took a lethal cocktail of drink and drugs after his girlfriend accused him of being unfaithful.

The girl said: ‘I was grieving for someone who wasn’t real and felt I had been so gullible.’ Moreover her mother added: ‘This has been a threatening campaign against her just for their amusement and has wasted a lot of police time.’

Sergeant Paul Schofield, of Lancashire Police, said: ‘When all is said and done this is online bullying.

‘This could have been so much worse because there was a real possibility she could haves reacted to the news of his suicide. Social networking is a fantastic tool, but can be misused by a small percentage of people.’

It’s sickening to know that teenagers are hatching such ugly plots but this is human nature. Cyberbullying is nothing new. Although the net has been a great tool but some psychotic people will always abuse it. I believe on FB, it is still easier to protect yourself if you change the setting whereas on orkut, anyone could send you abusive scraps cause your scraps were open to all for a long time. Most of us left it, cause it was really annoying & some people just don’t have lives. They enjoy harassing people & the internet is the best place for them, cause they won’t ever be discovered particularly in Pakistan. Moreover, romance in real life can be so deceiving & the idea of one on FB is more of a joke.

Baby drowned in bath while the mom checked Facebook

A teenage mother let her 8 month old baby drown in a bath while she checked messages on FB. Shannon Woods is 19 year old & she has got a 12 month jail sentence only. Although she received first-aid instructions on the phone but the baby couldn’t survive.

Shannon Woods also changed her statements a couple of times. She told lies & at one point, she got even tired of lying. She’s basically a troubled teenager. She was checking FB on her mobile at the time of tragedy. In fact she left the baby for 5 minutes in the bath & water was much deep.

The court was told that shortly before the baby died a cigarette burn had been found on its arm. But the girl said that a relation had accidentally dropped a cigarette end which had come into contact with the baby's skin.

The judge told Guildford Crown Court it was: 'criminal neglect of the most serious kind.'

She’s scared that the social services would now take her unborn child away. Gregory Fishwick said his client had a low IQ and had mental health problems and 'she loved her little daughter'. And this tragedy will have long term implications for his client. Moreover, the defendant's mother is also dying of cancer.

This case is again very saddening. A little baby died due to the negligent of the mother & we can’t ignore the fact that the mother is too young & maybe she’s really depressed. I mean who in her senses would leave the baby in the bath & check messages on the phone. This indicates a very abnormal behavior.

Prostitutes Turn to Facebook

A survey of sex workers in New York City finds that 83% of prostitutes have a Facebook page. Earlier on it wasn’t FB but Craigslist (another website) that was favored by them. Even before the crackdown on the site, prostitutes were turning to FB.

Prostitutes also say that having a Blackberry is significant in this business. In fact, digital technology has helped professionalize such transactions. These sex workers can very easily avoid pimps & madams & keep 100 % of their profits.

“Between 2003 and 2008, the share of regular clients coming from Craigslist fell from 9% to 3%, while the share from Facebook jumped from zero to 25%...by the end of 2011, Facebook will be the leading on-line recruitment space," Venkatesh declares in Wired.

At the same time The New York Daily News reports that "Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes said the site comes down hard on anyone who uses it for illegal ends." However, that won’t stop people from using it for their business of any kind I guess. And it won’t be fair either to stop them from advertising online.

Paris Hilton’s birthday cake stolen

Socialite Paris Hilton's 30th birthday cake was stolen by a Los Angeles musician, Paz. He gatecrashed the party & he stole the cake because he didn't want the cake to be served to the guests. There was something unusual about this $2000 cake.

Paz was not even invited to the party but he got into the bash through his well-connected buddy Kevin. He also posted on his Facebook page:

"I woke up this morning with a $2,000 birthday cake in my living room. It's big. It's red. It says 'Paris' and its delicious ... At an inebriated moment I decided no one was going to waste $2,000 worth of anything on my watch. I had to rescue that cake,"

Paz admits he had to come up with a scheme to get the cake out of the house without any of the security guards employed realizing what he was doing. He even managed to convince the security that he had been asked to remove the cake.

He explained: "In one fluid motion, I sidestep a confused waiter, seize the prize, and face to the door. I pass the security chief again on the way out. I nod purposefully ... he nods in return and 40 seconds later I'm in the front seat of a Nissan Maxima with 70lbs of awesome in my lap. Success!"

What happened is of course funny but at the same time, it’s bad that her cake was stolen by someone. But the cake looks hideous. I seriously have my doubt if it could be delicious. FB is not shutting down

Facebook is not shutting down but the term “Facebook shutting down March 15” is one of the top Google searches. The rumor did spread around Twitter and Tumblr & as usual people believed it & became panicky.

The rumor started with a Weekly World News piece (it’s a satire site) in which it was written that Mark Zuckerberg was stressed out by running the giant company. They wrote that Zuck said, "Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That's always a good thing."

It has been reported that Facebook recently took a $50 million investment from Goldman Sachs. They're hard at work and not about to quit.

At the moment, there’s nothing to worry about, if you’re hooked to FB. But the comments on the write-up Facebook will end on March 15^th are really hilarious & more than 15,000 left comments. There’s also a ‘Save FB’ petition.

However, Mark Zuckerberg Facebook page has been hacked & the hacker even left a status in which he suggested the site should let people invest in it rather than banks. Interestingly, more than 1800 people liked the update before the company took down its page.

Amber Alerts on Facebook Now

Unfortunately, as much as we wouldn't want to hear such sad news, we do get to hear or watch on news that some kid has gone missing and that the parents are desperately looking for their children. Very often, radio alerts, city specific news updates are given so that anybody in that vicinity can help in finding such missing children. Text messages for such cases are also received if one has signed up. Responsible networks and organizations such as AOL, Yahoo, Google and Microsoft all help in disseminating such information.

And now facebook too will do this work of spreading the word around about missing children so that help is provided. Of course, this is all an optional feature and if one wants to specifically receive updates for his location, he will get updates only for that vicinity. Facebook is one of the most popular forms of viral communication and the word spreads around quickly, so it is hoped that this move will help in finding missing children.

The Amber alert program, which was established 15 years ago after the abduction and murder of its namesake, 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, has so far resulted in the recovery of 525 kids according to Ernie Allen, CEO of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Just William star targeted by stalker on Facebook

Child actor Daniel Roche, who played Just William in the recent BBC1 series, has been targeted by an internet stalker who set up a fake Facebook page in his name. But when Daniel’s mother asked Facebook to take the page down they failed to act – until The Mail on Sunday stepped in.

Well this has been the usual story of FB. They do nothing till the media steps in.

A fake page was also created in the name of 8 year old Isabella who played Violet Elizabth Bott in Just William. Daniel’s mom discovered about her son’s fake page when Isabella’s mother told her. Although Isabella’s parents somehow managed to persuade FB to delete that page, but when Daniel’s parents contacted FB, nothing was done.

Scotland Yard also failed to act after Mrs Roche complained to a police station in North London. But Scotland Yard said it had ‘no knowledge’ of a complaint having been made by Mrs Roche. Very weird!

Last year, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre attacked Facebook for refusing to install a panic button which would allow users to report inappropriate behaviour on the site directly to CEOP.

A Facebook spokeswoman said:

‘It’s against Facebook’s rules to use a fake name or operate under a false identity and we provide our users with the tools to report anyone they think is doing this via report links on every page of our site.

These tools enable people to flag exactly why they are reporting someone, for example an inappropriate picture or a fake profile, and we urge all our users to make sure they are aware of how to use these reporting tools correctly.’

I don’t think any action is ever taken on FB. It’s only when the media gets in the picture, they delete pages or fake ids. They may have provided options, but it’s all useless. In fact a time comes when a person is so used to these fake ids that he/she stops complaining about them. Moreover, stalkers also confuse themselves as admirers, which is of course very amusing, as long as it’s not happening to you. It sounds like a broken record but FB never takes any action. Instead of wasting time on fake ids, it’s better to ignore them.

Social networking is so much fun. You get to meet people from all over the world. But it's not just FB, even other sites face the same problem. There are always people who want to abuse & invade the privacy of others. It doesn't matter what is their problem.

Jo Yeates' Facebook friends are asked for DNA samples as calls for mass screening grow

Detectives hunting the killer of Joanna Yeates are taking DNA samples from her Facebook friends.

They are swabbing dozens of people across Britain as calls for mass screening in her home city grow.

Those targeted include men who live more than 100 miles from the murder scene.

Officers are convinced that Miss Yeates, who was missing for eight days before her body was found a short drive from her home on Christmas Day, was killed by someone she knew.

The landscape architect had up to 200 friends on the website. Police are also asking for background information about her life and her relationship with her boyfriend Greg Reardon.

Police are also studying phone records after it emerged from one of Jo's friends that she sent her last text at 8.20pm.

Jo invited Matthew Wood out for a drink in the message but because he was at a Christmas party he didn't reply until 9.20pm. He told The Sun of his subsequent anguish at the fact that Jo didn't reply, but police hope the new information will help them determine what time she was strangled.

Police forces in other parts of the country are assisting with taking the DNA samples and conducting interviews.

One of Miss Yeates’s friends, who lives more than 100 miles from Bristol and had not seen the 25-year-old for several weeks, had a swab taken from the inside of his cheek last week.

As for her relationship with Greg, it was solid, they were happy and a great couple.

It is now 24 days since Miss Yeates was last seen alive.

Avon and Somerset Police insist they are ‘happy’ with the progress of the investigation.

But a source said: ‘A meeting has been called at the highest level to address major concerns.

‘There is a growing feeling that the inquiry team has too many young detectives on it. The longer the investigation goes on, the bigger the need for some old hands and detectives with 25 or so years of experience.’

Miss Yeates was last seen alive on December 17, when she was out for a drink with friends.

Her landlord Christopher Jefferies, 65, was arrested on suspicion of her murder and released on police bail. He denies any involvement.

Fun Photos on FB

This is not a very sensitive topic, but many will be offended. You know some people upload all kinds of pics & then we get sms, calls or messages in our inbox to check out those albums.

You don’t have to be curious enough. I guess it just happens. And I have never been able to understand as to why people upload such intimate photos as display pics & they even allow everyone to click & see the pic in totality. Which generates emails & the never-ending gossip sessions see no end for at least 2 days. Can you actually blame those who go on talking & talking for sometime? For God’s sake, we are humans, not angels!

There are times when you don’t have access, but people love sharing such things on mails. So if you have a habit of putting such pics on FB, keep in mind that your pics might be circulating. You cannot trust your friends or colleagues. Both male & females are into this thing. I’m telling you from my personal experience.

It’s amusing but the lives of some people do not move ahead till they put albums on FB. Sometimes I do feel sorry as some people only believe in jeering at them & at the same time, they leave nice comments.

As much as I hate to admit it, even I keep an eye on 2 people, but they are not in my circle. And yes I do not know why it is always 2 rather than just one. But in a way, we all are curious to some extent.

Dog’s sad saga ends with a new beginning in Arizona sanctuary

Smokey, the dog that attracted an international following for surviving a brutal beating, being run over by a car and escaping euthanasia, left Ohio on Wednesday with a Tibetan Buddhist nun for his new home at an animal sanctuary in Arizona.

Drolma is director of Tara’s Babies Animal Welfare Sanctuary, which began as a 140-acre ranch to house animals displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The sanctuary has 70 dogs.

“We’re liberating Smokey from jail,” Drolma said.

Although Smokey’s story has a happy ending, his tale is a sad one. It began after the dog was accused of biting a 2-year-old boy during Memorial Day weekend and was later severely beaten with a Louisville Slugger baseball bat and hit with a car.

The dog originally was given to Greene County Animal Control for euthanasia, which prompted a response from animal rights groups worldwide to save the dog through Facebook sites and petitions.

With the help of donations collected through Facebook and its website, the sanctuary raised about $1,400 to fence in a new yard at the ranch for Smokey, complete with a cedar dog cabin.

“This is the beginning of his new life,” Drolma said. “His arrival at the sanctuary will be the first time in four months he’s been off a leash.”

Although the sanctuary is open to adopting Smokey out eventually, Drolma said that the sanctuary was really his home.

“We take a dog in for life,” she said. “When we take a dog in, it’s their home and they are our pets.”

Nov 17th - National UnFriend Day

Wow this is an amazing news. Something I truly believe in. Jimmy Kemmel announced on his Live Show that on 17th November, let us all truly be honest to ourselves and celebrate a National Un-Friend Day (NUD). He said that Facebook has actually worked hard on eradicating the essence of real friendships. The day is to be celebrated to protect the sacred nature of friendship that Facebook is destroying.

He feels that Facebook is cheapening friendship. One cannot have 1000s of friends realistically. Like he says, put up a status update you're moving on weekend and you will actually see how many people are your true friends if somebody responds to help you out. And that people keep changing their status every 5 sec, such people can't really have 100s of friends actually. So, he suggests to cut off such people from your life as friends are people who are very special and who actually mean something in your life. 

He even went on to explain further, that through NUD, he hopes that people will un-friend all those people from their list who are actually not your friends but you call them friends on Facebook. The show's website gives details of who is actual friends are :) which are as follows:

• If you wouldn’t loan someone 50 dollars, unfriend them.

• If you wouldn’t invite them to your birthday party, unfriend them.

• If you wouldn’t cry if they got hit by a bus, unfriend them.

Anyway, of course it is all sarcastic. But it is good to hear somebody say such stuff, though no one actually does something of that sort because people love to have pretentious lives. I thought it happens only in our part of the world but it's a universal thing.

Facebook and Twitter to be Included in Curriculum for Student Detectives

Oh my God, for once I feel I was a trend setter. I have worked very hard on my investigative skills with no formal training and so I know how significant it it in deriving the facts.

I came across this post that now facebook and twitter are officially put on the curriculum for student detectives as it will help them solve many cases especially those including rape, molestation, sexual abuse, cyber bullying etc. This was an area that was not covered properly but through proper training in the future detectives would also focus on these networks thoroughly to find the truth and catch criminals.

Facebook is Back

Well finally the day has come. My sister, who seriously missed facebook a lot these past few days and who I am sure would have protested like anything against all that happened. Anyway, I just got an update on twitter. The court has reversed its order and facebook ban has been removed.

Thus, we will be back to our normal routine :P And nobody would be cheating their way to facebook.I think it will be up by tomorrow.

PAKISTANI COURT REMOVES FACEBOOK BAN

A court in Pakistan has ordered the authorities to restore the Facebook social networking site.

The court had ordered the blocking of the site after a petition was filed against a competition featuring caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

The petition, filed by a lawyers' group called the Islamic Lawyers' Movement, said the contest was "blasphemous".

Pakistan's deputy attorney told the court on Monday that Facebook had withdrawn the competition.

The Facebook page in question contained caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad and characters from other religions, including Hinduism and Christianity, as well as comments both critical and supportive of Islam.

On Monday, Justice Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court reversed his 19 May order to the Pakistani authorities to block the site.

"Restore Facebook. We don't want to block access to information," Justice Chaudhry told the court.

He asked the government to develop a system to find out how countries like Saudi Arabia were blocking access to "blasphemous" content on the internet.

"It is the government's job to take care of such things, which spark resentment among the people and bring them onto the streets.

"They should take steps to block any blasphemous content on the internet," Justice Chaudhry said.

Last week, Pakistan restored access to popular video sharing website YouTube only after blocking some pages for "sacrilegious content".

Correspondents say that the internet is uncensored in Pakistan but the government monitors content by routing all traffic through a central exchange.

In the past, Pakistan has often blocked access to pornographic sites and sites with anti-Islamic content.

It has deemed such material as offensive to the political and security establishment of the country, says the BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad.

In 2007, the government banned the YouTube site, allegedly to block material offensive to the government of Pervez Musharraf.

The action led to widespread disruption of access to the site for several hours. The ban was later lifted.
