Save Our Libraries Day

Today is an important day for anybody who believed in the power of reading and knowledge through books in quiet libraries. Throughout UK, the British people are out protesting on Save Our Libraries Day today because 400 libraries are under threat of closure due to budget constraints.

Therefore with the support of many writers, the British citizens protested against this decision by taking part in mass-reads, author events and much more.

This is sad news for people because libraries provide a free source of countless knowledge. Parents, writers and children have all shown their displeasure towards such a ridiculous decision.

I think it not at all a positive sign for any society. Here we wish for more and libraries where people could acquire more knowledge; where children group up going through all the wonderful children's books. It is an experience and a lifestyle that should be promoted rather than closing down libraries. In modern age, we have well equipped libraries with computers and internet. I think this is one of the most stupidest things I have heard. Who the hell closes down libraries? What is so wrong with a decent institution and noble practice of reading? Or is it all a thing of the past?

My Spider Links Are Tingling

Playbill Julie Andrews and Dolly Parton are both getting special Grammys this year.
Pixar Blog another FYC ad for Toy Story 3 as Titanic. Hmmm. I gotta say, I am not sure about the taste level on this one. What'cha think?
BBC Anne Hathaway discusses that Judy Garland biopic. There's some hesistancy about the singing. Here's a clue. If you can sing as well as Anne Hathaway (very well) star in a musical, not a biopic with one of the most famous voices of all time that you won't be able to replicate. Argh.
Old Hollywood, my favorite tumblr, gives a rooftop view of the filming of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1931).
IndieWire The Year of the Actress. 60 Women FYC.

THR whoa. Broadway stars are on the attack after injuries on that Spider Man set. But wait there's more...
AV Club heated meetings and cancellations follow latest injury.
Wet Asphalt on "slipstream" and the continuum between genre fiction and mainstream fiction. I'm linking up to this because I read my first China MiƩville novel earlier this year and am still... uncertain... about it.

Dorian Gray & The Sister’s Keeper

Yesterday I watched 2 movies – Dorian Gray & My Sister’s Keeper. The Picture of Dorian Gray has been one of my favourite books & I also liked My Sister’s Keeper. I expected the movies to be pathetic. But both the movies can be watched. They have made some changes, which seem annoying, but over all both the movies are fine. If you haven’t read the books, you wouldn’t notice anything as such.

In My Sister’s Keeper, the elder sister dies rather than the younger one. The character of the lawyer’s ex-girlfriend was also chopped off totally from the movie.

They also made the end of Dorian Gray dramatic. There was no need for that, but these movie people have this bad habit or maybe they just can’t do justice to the piece of Literature. Harry was no where around when Dorian dies. He wants to destroy the painting, but when he tries to destroy it, he himself dies. They discover the body of an old man the next day.

Anyhow, when I saw the movie on The Count of Monte Cristo, I was disgusted. So many characters were not in the movie. But I watched it, because of James Caviezel. Which reminds me of Ben Barnes. They have given the right face to the character of Dorian Gray. He has acted well, besides looking awesome. He is definitely the right choice.

I also watched the trailer of The Time Traveler’s Wife. Eric Bana is the one who time travels. I did enjoy reading the book & I hope that Eric Bana will not disappoint us.

Rock of Agony

“To the pure, all things are pure; not only meats & drinks, but all kind of knowledge whether of good or evil; the knowledge cannot defile, nor consequently the books, if the will & conscience be not defiled.”

Dionysius was an extremely respected Bishop of Alexandria. He used to read the books written by heretics in order to refute their arguments. One of the priests told him that it was a wrong approach. Naturally he was perplexed but then a vision from God told him to read all those books, because he had reason & judgment to choose.

“The Lord will know what to forbid & what to allow without your help.”

George Bernard Shaw

“Knowledge is always good whether it pertains to good or evil. If the mind & the will are not already corrupted, books & the knowledge derived from them cannot corrupt them.”

John Milton

We have often come across people who presume everything & they also think they are always right. On top of it, they have the audacity to impose their silly opinions on others. George Feydeau rightly describes them for us:

“Some people are born pests. You can never get rid of them.”

And more importantly, “One doesn’t write for slaves.” Jean-Paul Sartre

Anyway, the thing is…people are entitled to have any kind of views whether others approve of them or not. When they go around forcing opinions & what they think is right on others, the situation becomes all the more ugly. Everyone should know their limits, that is, they have no right to go around bullying others.

Lately we have come across aliens who themselves don’t do any research, but drag in Dr. Zakir. Dr. Zakir is a scholar & knowledgeable person no doubt & he has worked very hard, but to presume that he has all the answers is wrong. He’s not a prophet. I’m sorry to say but being a Muslim, it’s a sin to raise someone to that level. They ought to be ashamed of themselves, but no, they create hurdles in other people’s path & ask them to follow the same thing blindly. What losers! Just by denying a problem, they think it would disappear. The Holy Quran is the primary source & it is incumbent on every Muslim to go through the translations & interpretations.

Again it is explicitly mentioned in the Holy Quran says:

“Clear proofs have come to you from your Lord. Whoso sees clearly, it is to his own gain, & whoso is blind, it is to his own loss.”

“The Lord knows very well who goes astray from His path; He knows very well the right-guided.”

The Holy Quran

It has been so that people with vision are invariably rare & those who can understand them are even rarer. However, there are always people out there who just hate & they can’t help hating & fueling their hate. You can’t pour sense into their senseless heads & we don’t have to either. They are so, as God intends them to be. This is just not our headache.

“Good & evil we know in the field of this world grow up together almost inseparably, & the knowledge of good is so involved & interwoven with the knowledge of evil & in so many cunning resemblances hardly to be discerned, that those confused seeds which were imposed upon Psyche as an incessant labour to cull out & sort asunder, were not more intermixed.”

John Milton
