Frenzy of the cultured

Few years ago, one learned professor, the vice-chancellor & the registrar in the Punjab University had serious issues with the word ‘rape’ used in the title of the epic poem ‘The Rape of the Lock.’ They said it was an indecent word & this book shouldn’t be a part of the curriculum. These cultured fellas regarded the word ‘rape’ as having an indecent connotation. But we all know that over-enthusiastic people never embark upon the venture of cleansing the society from the real act; so they find faults with words & call them dirty, indecent & judgmental.

Anyway, ‘The Rape of the Lock’ is one of the finest mock epic poems that relates a trivial incident & describes the theft of the heroine’s hair. It makes a good commentary on the upper-class English society of that time, which was infested with numerous follies & vices. Hence the word ‘rape’ in the title is the most appropriate one, because it depicts the emptiness of life & Alexander Pope ridicules it by choosing this particular word.

Literature offers new & creative ways to interpret the world. Different writers look at events or happenings from totally different angles, which enable them to assign different meanings to what they see or experience; as a result, they produce different descriptions of them. Those who think that Literature is just about playing with words & talking about sex need to hold their sacred views to themselves. When we need their opinions, we’ll ask for them.

Anyway, it’s just not the word ‘rape.’ People have problems with innumerable words. Lechery, desperate, sex slaves, human trafficking, incest, fuck, bastard etc etc are some of the words that can drive people nuts. I have witnessed that madness, but I don’t feel sorry for such people. Those who regard particular words as dirty, judgmental, indecent, inappropriate are most welcome not to use these words, but what’s the point of imposing their rotten views on others? We all have the right to learn things on our own. We don’t need this kind of madness; it is not just madness but it is also corrupt on the part of anyone who forces others to do what they want to do. You don’t want to use a word. Don’t use it. Why do you want others not to use it or to use it?

In fact such acts remind me of one of the slogans of the party in 1984 that says: “Ignorance is strength.” Maybe these people are inspired by the Big Brother & his lousy principles. Maybe even here the main aim is to narrow down the range of thought. When words won’t be there, people won’t be able to think.

“It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words…After all, what justification is there for a word which is simply the opposite of some other word? A word contains its opposite in itself.”

George Orwell

“In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined & all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out & forgotten.”

George Orwell

You know nothing is too coarse for my chaste pen. I often use the word fuck & it is considered unethical by many but quite frankly, I don’t give a flying fuck to it. Come to think of it, if we don’t use the word lechery, lecherous people will not be wiped out from the planet & neither would lechery. People may stop using terms such as human trafficking, but sex slaves will not disappear in thin air. Yes you can close your eyes but you can’t change the reality. By putting emphases on words like bastard or harami, you’re not contributing anything. The plight of illegitimate children wouldn’t reduce by even an inch.

I had the misfortune to work with this dysfunctional lady & she used to say that we must always use Mister & Miss when we talk to people. We shouldn’t use he/she or him/her as that is disrespectful. There are too many mad people out there & we don’t have time to know how fucked up are they anyway.

We need words to think. We need words to express ourselves. Shakespeare once said, ‘Nothing is good or bad, but thinking makes it so.’

Since I’m not a psychiatrist or a psychologist, I don’t know what’s wrong with people who have problem with words. Either they have experienced something so bad that they can’t help being what they are. They don’t even want people to use such words that remind them of such incidents. It is some sort of disorder. I don’t think it’s a normal behaviour to impose such views on others.

If freedom is our birthright, then we can use any word we like whether the world approves of it or not. Of course there are man-made chains every where…this is a fact we can’t run away from. But to put boundaries on your thinking is I guess the worst crime a human can do to himself.

Develop a Grudge…it’s in vogue!

Sometimes I seriously feel like running away from here & never hearing from anyone who has problems with my existence. I’m fucking tired of this nonsense. But the thing is…I’m not going anywhere. In fact, I’m going to write something that would be extremely smelly for your nose. As it is, it always seems you have this exotic cow dung under your nose.

The other day some of us were talking to a friend on her status. And suddenly a lady came & said to my friend: Fuck off the quizzes. She wrote the word fuck in caps lock. So that those who have never heard it from her mouth should notice it I guess. Actually I don’t know…I use the word myself also. But I don’t think it sounds cool. I know it sounds trashy.

The thing is…I have often seen that some people in our lists don’t realize that there is a limit to everything. Just because they haven’t been thrown on the limited list, they think they can say anything, anywhere. I had 2 such ladies in my list who wanted to act different all the time. Trying to prove something to everyone, but couldn’t prove anything to even a single person. Quite frankly, most of my friends only called them weird.

Few days ago, I posted a note on my FB & they thought that they had the right to rape it…which they did. They plundered the words & concepts that weren’t even scribbled. But they believed they had the right to rape. That was funny. When I did what they were doing on that very same note to what they were saying, both the ladies were offended. I think I should have done that long time ago, but I didn’t out of courtesy. Since they weren’t good friends, so it didn’t matter. I did mention about the lady who was pissed off as I used the word slut in one of my writings. The other lady was her follower. My mother doesn’t let me keep a dog & here we have people who have dogs in human forms.

Anyway, I have often heard that people cross their boundaries. They make weird & cheap comments on the status, albums & notes. I also have friends who throw almost everyone on their limited list before adding them. I don’t know if it’s right or wrong. I’d rather not add a person, if I don’t trust him in the 1st place. I respect everyone unless & until that person begs me not to respect him/her.

This guy went really crazy making stupid comments on our blognetwork a month ago. When he joined our blognetwork, he asked my sister to identify herself in the pic. Then one day, he tried to befriend me. I didn’t accept his request for obvious reason & man, he developed a strange kind of grudge. Then whatever happened could be aptly called the making of the Grudge 4. Yeah some people don’t know there’s actually the Grudge 3. He started painting me as a kafir on the blognetwork. Did I tell you one of those 2 ladies thought I was in search of religion? It’s amazing that people know as to what is going on inside your head & they know what steps others should take. Ever since, I have become that abnormal child of the Grudge.

Then there are people who try to fit in everywhere. Are they the most annoying type? I think there are various varieties of annoying people in the world. Some try to dance on the head. Some try to act smart when they are not that smart. Some seriously tell everyone what to do. Everyone is trying out something. I don’t really like people who put up with nonsense though.

I have some more stories…they aren’t that great either. I had 2 friends who used to tell everyone how to pronounce the words correctly & people used to follow them. Only I don’t have a dog. What a pity! There was another university friend…she really had problems with females who didn’t wear their dupattas properly. She was all the time reporting about guys who were watching dames…you-know-where. I also know someone who knows what people talk about others when they come out after their interview. A friend used to say that a girl who smokes can do anything. I don’t have such friends anymore.

Anyway the bottom line is: the world needs all kinds of people. Nothing is useless…not even a lousy experience on the net. Don’t let anything or anyone spoil your mood.

Words

“Home was a place you lived in, love was a thing you didn’t fool yourself about…happiness was a term of hypocrisy used to bluff other people, a father was an individual who enjoyed his own existence, a husband was a man you lived with & kept going in spirits. As for sex, the last of the great words, it was just cocktail term for an excitement that bucked you up for a while, then left you more raggy than ever. Frayed! It was as if the very material you were made of cheap stuff, & was fraying out to nothing.”

D. H. Lawrence

The book that is not on the shelf

I usually don’t like my writings, because I’m never satisfied. The only factors that stand out in my writings are most probably honesty & the fact that I write things with finality. Anyway, I really liked our book & I was not supposed to write on it today. In fact, I didn’t want to, but my sister is on the net & I have nothing better to do. And I’m certainly not in mood of reading right now. So, I’ll talk about our book ‘If mortals had been immortals & other short stories.’

Well Z & I had loads of fun while writing this book. We started off in 2006 & finished the book after a year. Writing a book is not anything easy, as many presume it to be. Try it & you will get the picture. We worked really hard. 1 & a half year was wasted in waiting as one of my brothers said that he would get it published in America (anything can be published in the land of opportunity) where he lives, but somehow he never had the time.

Our book is far ahead of time & it is experimental writing. Naturally America seemed to be the right place. Somehow we got it published online & here I would like to thank those 5 people who bought our book in which no one believes. We tried to get it in hard copy, but we haven’t succeeded so far, as it’s not about partition or music or some kind of art that the world can relate to. I really don’t know the reason as I don’t live in the minds of people. And just come to think of it, what a sad abode that would be! Maybe it’s not the right time, but when is the right time to start thinking? When is the right time to look at a thing from another angle? If it’s not now, then when? Do we need thousand more years to wait? Maybe they can wait. It suits them.

Writers like D. H. Lawrence have suffered & who are we? Exactly nothing! Rejection is not a new phenomenon for Z & I. In a way, I feel good that it’s not typical writing & that’s why people aren’t ready for it. Moreover, it’s available on the net. Even when we die, our book lives. The words we have scribbled aren’t being wasted. That much I know.

However, people drink piss because they have to & they start shitting in their pants when they hear of something extraordinary. I don’t know if it’s ever going to change. I still believe in my work & I was asking Z the other day that we should go till the end. We just can’t give up, cause people are not ready for something far ahead of time. Just because they are scared doesn’t mean the work is a piece of shit. And we see countless books that aren’t even readable & yet they are in the market. Quite frankly, I mostly read classics, cause these new books are rarely readable. Sometimes it seems paper has been wasted. I’m so sorry for being blunt, but this is how I see it. And I don’t think our book falls in that category.

I’m not saying Z & I are the best writers of this century. I can’t say that. But I know how we write & I don’t think anyone can demoralize us. I still believe in our work & I just can’t give up on it, cause not a single soul believes in it. In fact, I want to work on another book with my crazy partner. I look forward to it. I really do.

What an awesome discovery!

“These empty words of yours do not weigh on me.”

Euripides

Certainly they don’t as they don’t have any weight in them, so it would be better if such empty words aren’t being uttered at all…it’s more or less noise. And what’s the point in creating noise pollution? Anyway Plautus comes to my rescue when he says:

“You hand me that talk & I’ll hand you something you won’t like.”

That’s the kind of attitude I like. I also know someone very well who has this attitude.

Actually I was just going through my notebooks & I came across a couple of quotes. Well I don’t actually maintain dairies in which I write down personal stuff as such.

Literature is indeed the most seductive thing that could happen to a person. It would not be wrong to say you can have loads & loads of fun with your clothes on…it is that sort of thing. And only another Literature lover could understand what I’m saying. This is not for everyone to assimilate I guess. So don’t try & don’t think.

Work of art and even analytical writings are not for everyone. These are for those who can understand the meaning that is not being said openly. You discover the meaning on your own & it’s not for everyone. I’ve seen that mostly people don’t understand paintings. All they see is a nude model. They are insulting the work of art by making such remarks. Lady Chatterley’s Lover was taken so badly.

Anyhow, Fyodor Dostoyevsky puts it very aptly:

“It is not worth while paying attention to them, because they count for exactly nothing.”

I’m sure we all have experienced this. Sometimes it really is not worth it, unless you think it’s good for a laugh.

Jean-Paul Sartre says it with so much finality that it may break the subject to pieces & it does:

“You are nothing, you do nothing, you have done nothing, & you can do nothing.”

And lastly I will quote Somerset:

“And when you die will it have mattered a damn whether you ever lived or not?”

This is the question which ought to be asked. The answer may surprise you. Yeah if you have a bad habit of lying to yourself, don’t make an attempt. It’s injurious to health.

I Talk to Myself Part 2

How can you be so certain?
Maybe they know your game.
These words ought to be marked.
My fate can be yours tomorrow.
You’re playing false. What goes around comes around.
Don’t climb the mountains on this borrowed happiness.
Landslides are quite common.

******

Ever wondered…
What’s the difference between a perfect day and a storm?
A storm comes everyday.
A perfect day is rare.
No, storm is not always an intense tragedy.
You need fuel to run your car.
******

You can hurt me for a while.
But you can’t hurt me forever.
This I tell you today.
Though I know you will take many years to grasp the idea.
I’m not your enemy as you think I am.
You see, revolutions and evolutions,
Are not always cute.
