UK, Bill Gates lead $4b vaccination drive

Meeting in London for the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) summit, politicians, charities, private companies and philanthropists pledged more than $4 billion to the campaign.

It is estimated pneumonia and diarrhoea kill three times more children under five worldwide than malaria and HIV/AIDS combined.

Experts say the death toll is so high because developing countries cannot afford vaccines.

Today I got my treadmill, I’m super super excited to begin some legit exercise finally! I’ve lost 24.4lbs with very little exercise, so I’m excited to amp it up. The one time I lost a lot of weight in the past years and years ago it was from consistently using the treadmill.

I’m going to make myself turn into a complete exercise freak, I really want to be one of those people who claims to be “addicted” to exercise/the endorphin rush.

So for the rest of the week, I’m going to use the treadmill for a minimum of 2hrs a day. Aka 10 hrs. It will mostly be fast walking, a bit of jogging and a bit of running. With my intake I post everyday, I’ll also post my workouts and miles/km run. But I won’t post “net calories” I don’t think.

I weighed in at 239.8 lbs on sunday and I want to weigh-in at 234.6 lbs or less this sunday! Then I will have lost 30 lbs. Which will be spectacular. =]

Food wise or exercise wise, any suggestions?

Renee-Cooper Split Up Rumors

I never even knew these guys were going out together in the first place, but the word is that Bradley Cooper and Renee Zellweger have decided to split up after less than two years of relationship.

Their spokespersons were not available to comment on their relationship status to confirm the news.

They met for the first time while shooting for the 2010 horror-thriller "Case 39". They were very quiet about their relationship for the longest time but later expressed their love for each other out in the open.

They were very happy when they started going out together. But they never got engaged.

Both Cooper and Zellweger were married to other people in 2005 and 2006 whom them left after four months of marriage.

Anyhow, I really liked Bradley Cooper in the movie Case 39. I felt for the guy when he was killed in the movie. In fact, the way he got scared after talking to that bitchy girl was amazing. I actually kind of like their couple. They look sweet together.

A Quote by Siddhartha Gautama Buddha

"When ignorant people see someone who is old, they are disgusted and horrified, even though they too will be old some day. I thought to myself: I don't want to be like the ignorant people. After that, I couldn't feel the usual intoxication with youth anymore.

When ignorant people see someone who is sick, they are disgusted and horrified, even though they too will be sick some day. I thought to myself: I don't want to be like the ignorant people. After that, I couldn't feel the usual intoxication with health anymore.

When ignorant people see someone who is dead, they are disgusted and horrified, even though they too will be dead some day. I thought to myself: I don't want to be like the ignorant people. After then, I couldn't feel the usual intoxication with life anymore."

The Evil Dead remake on its way

This is some bad news. They are making a remake. In fact, they have started working on it. Sam Raimi came up with the original idea some 3 decades ago. While promoting Drag Me to Hell, he hinted at working on a script, but he was looking for a younger director. But lately, they have been working on the script. In fact Robert Tapert who has worked with just about every movie Sam Raimi has ever made said this month that Evil Dead remake is not dead at all.

Fans have been begging for Evil Dead 4 for quite some time. Few years ago, they were making a remake, but after a while, they stopped working on it.

And I’m wondering who could do justice to the character of Bruce Campbell. We are so used to him as Ashley. Can we ever accept another Ashley J. Williams? I think it would be a lot better to make part 4 on Evil Dead rather than a remake on it. Even the idea of remake sucks big time! I’m so not interested in watching this remake. We’ve grown up watching it & it’s like they are about to pee on the entire story.

Have you seen the Woods? Oh God, it’s an excellent movie & it’s based on a true story. And when Bruce Campbell is there, everything becomes believable. I saw it on TV but unfortunately we never get the DVD. It’s a must watch.

Altitude to be rated R see the trailer

In a win for those tired of PG crappy horror, Altitude has received a "R" rating. Still could be a crappy movie but it looks good and smells of Lovecratft.  Just take a look at the poster and the trailer.  It is hinted at in the trailer that it could all be the effects of altitude causing hallucinations, but I'm hoping they don't go that way.  Start with the jokes, Squids in Space or Chthulu on a Plane.  Thanks to Rebecca Herzberger for origianlly posting the video on her Facebook or I might not have heard about it

The Divide teaser trailer

A friend brought this to my attention. Thanks Brian. It's by the director of Frontiers so it has the potential of being extremely brutal. It looks to be an end of the world, apocalypitic thriller but looks can be deceiving and I am expecting some type of twist. The movie is currently in production so no clue when we mighgt see it. It is on my radar now and I will try and drop an update when I find one. For now enjoy the teaser trailer

George Romero to remake Deep Red

According to variety magazine, George Romero is in “advanced negotiation to direct a 3-D remake of Dario Argento’s Deep Red. The screen play is being written by Dario’s brother Claudio, who also is co producer. Dario reportedly has no involvement with the script.

The two directors have a long relationship with each other and honestly if the film has to be remade, then I’d guess George is the man to do it. However I despise remakes in general and Argento’s work will be extremely hard to do properly in my opinion.

Argento’s film are a product of that era, a era that is no longer her or in vogue with the movie going audience. I simply cannot see an English language version of Deep Red playing in America if it is faithful to the original. I can see George trying to make a good film I just don’t think the studio will let him. If it is faithful, I don’t see American audiences rushing to see it. I could be wrong and hope I am for Romero’s sake.

Season of the Witch

Nicolas Cage stars as a 14th century Crusader who returns with his comrade (Ron Perlman) to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague. A beleaguered church, deeming sorcery the culprit of the plague, commands the two knights to transport an accused witch (Claire Foy) to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence.

A priest (Stephen Campbell Moore), a grieving knight (Ulrich Thomsen), an itinerant swindler (Stephen Graham) and a headstrong youth who can only dream of becoming a knight (Robert Sheehan) join a mission troubled by mythically hostile wilderness and fierce contention over the fate of the girl.

When the embattled party arrives at the abbey, a horrific discovery jeopardizes the knight's pledge to ensure the girl fair treatment, and pits them against an inexplicably powerful and destructive force.

The big question? Can Nicholas redeem himself after a host of stinker movies?

Coming soon from george Romero!

Cannibal Holocaust

A lot of films lay claim to the most disturbing movie of all times, even more are labeled that by fans, the media or groups protesting violent or disturbing films. Many times the label is applied by the films marketing team in hopes of stirring up interest, since any publicity is good publicity. While many films vie for this title and many deserve mention here there is one film that is generally agreed to by all that have seen it and many who haven’t, as the king of all disgusting films. It’s a film so disturbing that the director has apologized for parts of it and said he would never make a film with that content again. It was a film so controversial that the director was arrested and the film has been banned in many countries from one time to another. The movie was Cannibal Holocaust.
The movie was released in 1980 and the basic plot centers on a group of journalists who disappears into the wilds of the Amazon to film the natives who are suspected of practicing cannibalism. The group disappears and a New York. Anthropologist, Professor Monroe, goes into the jungle to locate them and find out what happened. With the help of local guides he finds the bodies near the encampment of the feared cannibal tribe. He is at first feared but eventually the tribe welcomes into their camp and invites him and his guide to a feast. He bargains for the film canisters and has to take part in the feast that involves him participating in cannibalism in order to get them. He returns to New York with the recovered film. The bulk of this movie is this film, showing the film crews journey into the jungle and their descent into depravity and eventual torture and death at the hands of the natives they sought to film.

Monroe brings the film back to New York where the local television station wants to broadcast the footage. Monroe insists on watching the film first after hearing that the film crew had a reputation of brutality toward locals and also a reputation of “setting up” atrocities so they could film it. After seeing the footage he recommends it be burned. At this point we watch along as he screens it for the execs and watch as the brutality unfolds.
We watch as the three men and woman embark in the Amazon and begin the trek into the “Green Inferno” as the locals call it. Almost immediately bad luck befalls them as their guide, Felipe, is bitten by a poisonous snake and dies soon after. The team continues on eventually encountering a group of the Yacumo, one of the tribes they set out to find. Deciding the best way to find the tribes camp is to follow them, they callously shoot one of the tribesmen in the leg to slow him down so they can follow. Arriving at the camp they resort to intimidating the tribe and set fire to one of the main buildings filled with tribesmen in order to film an “attack” on the peaceful tribe by cannibals. The leader of the team is so aroused by his murderous act that he roughly has sex with the female member, Faye, in front of the surviving tribesmen , while the last member, Andres, secretly films it. Leaving the tribe they come upon a forced abortion by the side of a river and the ritual stoning of the women. They comment that it is most likely a ritual punishment for adultery.
At this point we switch back to New York and Professor Munroe. He has seen the last reel of the film, that details the groups death. Once again he argues that the film should be destroyed, but the executives will not agree until they have seen the footage. Munroe again starts the film and we are thrust back into the jungle.
Several days have apparently passed since they left the Yacumo and the film crew states that they are in a different part of the jungle. They are in search of the feared Yamamomo tribe who they blamed the slaughter of the Yacumo upon. Suddenly they come across a young female member of the tribe and for unknown reasons they attack her and take turns raping her while filming the attack. Unknown to them another tribes member is watching from the tall grass as the scene plays out. Faye tries to protest the rape but she is held back. Its not clear if she is upset more about the rape or about her boyfriend Yates taking part. The film cuts and we see the team surrounding the young woman who has been impaled on a large stake with the end protruding from her mouth.. Yates is seen smiling at first, then strikes a concerned look for the camera as he explains that the girl was probably killed for a violation of the tribes sexual taboos. While it is not clear who killed the girl, we are strongly lead to believe it was the film team.
We then cut to the team once again in the jungle. They find themselves surrounded by natives in apparent anger over the attack on the girl. The team fights back as the tribe attacks but one by one they are caught and brutally killed. Yates as the last one killed keeps filming, seemingly taking more interest in the film than his friends lives. In the final shot Yates is speared and drops his camera, then falls dead in front of the lens.Back in New York the executives are shocked and disgusted. They agree with Munroe that the film should never be shown. The tapes are destroyed. As Monroe walks out of the building and down the street, the last words of the film were “ I wonder who the real cannibals are.”
The brutality of the film crew on the natives and the filming of the crews death are disturbing enough. What really sets this film apart and causes it’s notoriety though is the animal slaughter. Throughout the film several animals are brutally killed for the film. It is real, it is not fake and it is brutal. The animals include a snake, a spider, a monkey,, a pig, a turtle and a ferret. The turtle scene especially is hard to watch as the team pulls it from the water, and viciously slaughters it. The scene goes on for several minutes. Another scene involves a monkey. It is reported that the director actually had a fake monkey, but that the natives insisted on using a live monkey, since monkey brains were considered a delicacy. The scene took two takes so two monkeys were killed. The animal scenes are what the director Ruggero Deodato says he regrets. They are the reason the film is still banned and considered so controversial.
Ironically the director was arrested for the scenes involving the human actors. Apparently because the animal scenes were so real some authorities believed that he had actually had the actors killed for the film. He had the entire cast sign non disclosure agreements and non publicity agreements as a way of gaining publicity for the film. The apparent disappearance of the actors lead fuel to their suspicions. Deodato was forced to break their agreements and summon them to appear or face charges of murder. Like wise the young girl who was impaled was compelled to appear . The director also had to explain exactly how the scene was done, which involved her sitting on a mounted bicycle seat and holding the point of the spear in her mouth..
What is interesting to me is that none of the human death scenes look particularly real. I think the unrelenting reality of the animal deaths simply mad e the human deaths look more real. What is not known to many people who have watched the film is that there is actual footage of humans being killed in the film. At one point a “documentary” is shown that has supposedly been shot by the film team before their journey to South America. The film shows actual executions from Africa and South East Asia. Professor Munroe is told that the film crew apparently set up these atrocities, this gives us insight into Yates character before we see his actions in the jungle..
Deodato has said he was making a film purely for shock value. If this is true than he accidentally made a film with deeper meaning . I can in no way condone the animal slayings, and while I have seen it once, if I ever watch it again it will be a censored version. Still the slayings add a rawness that otherwise would not be there. I think the human killings would look silly without them. It is interesting that the “cannibals” are not guilty of as many atrocities as the “civilized” film crew, at least on screen. Also since the sickening animal slays almost all come from the film crew, we have little sympathy at watching their obviously fake deaths. Deodato effectively points the camera at us and says we are the true savages. We go about our everyday life taking no concern over the brutality all around us. We automatically assume that anyone not as civilized as us has no worth. Who are we to judge our lifestyle as superior to theirs? True we don’t practice cannibalism but we have devalued human life to the point that death no longer fazes us. We routinely step on others to get where we want to go and never consider those we harm in the process. In our race to civilization have we lost our humanity? Maybe we all need to get back to the jungle .
Cannibal Holocause is available in R rated and Unrated versions. It contains graphic male and female nudity, sex, scenes of violence including rape and other sexual violence, profanity and actual animal slayings. It is not for the squeamish.

Martyrs

Over the recent years movies such as Hostel and the Saw franchise have pushed blood and gore to new heights. Gore hounds have been pleased by this move away from PG-13 horror into more adult fare. Remakes such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills have Eyes, while light in substance have been heavy with violence and gore. This American fare still cannot compare with some of the violence and gore coming from across the Ocean. The French especially have shown great skill in producing extreme blood and gore, many times without sacrificing an absorbing storyline. The latest installment to French horror is Martyrs.

Martyrs is a 2008 film by French director Pascal Laugier that was released in the United States on DVD in April 2009. Martyrs was screened at Cannes in 2008 and an American remake, sadly, is being negotiated.
The film revolves around Lucie and Ana, two best friends seeking revenge for the horrors inflicted on Lucie as a child. Their plans spiral wildly out of control as Lucie’s past continually haunts her and we are left to decide what is real and what is in her mind. At least we are left to wonder until the second part of the Martyrs, when things go from bad to nuclear.

The story begins with Lucie escaping from an abattoir in which she has been imprisoned and tortured. Then it cuts to news coverage of her escape where we are told that she has been horrendously tortured, yet she has not been sexually abused. Lucie is placed in an orphanage where she befriends Ana. Even in the safety of the orphanage, Lucie cannot find peace as she is continuously tortured by a creature that only she, and the viewers, can see.

Martyrs then shifts fifteen years into the future into what we assume is a normal family home. The family is enjoying a typical breakfast, discussing family matters when suddenly a young woman bursts in and slaughters the entire family. We soon discover that this is Lucie, who believes the family to be responsible for her torture due to a newspaper clipping. After her murderous spree she calls Ana who comes to help her clean up the scene. We find that the creature is still haunting Lucie and inflicting horrible wounds upon her. Ana meanwhile, is disturbed by the violence and questions if the family was actually guilty.

Ana find that the mother is still alive and tries to help her escape. Lucie discovers them and brutally kills the mother. After killing the mother, the creature reappears. We discover that the creature is actually a manifestation of Lucie’s subconscious guilt over not rescuing a fellow captive when she escaped. With her quest for revenge now sated the creature drives Lucie to commit suicide. Ana. grief stricken over the loss of Lucie remains in the house, presumably awaiting arrest when the bodies are found. Ana is left with nothing but the knowledge that she is alone and has unknowingly helped in the slaughter of an innocent family. Then she finds the secret door to the underground storage and the horror of Martyrs really begins.

Do not go into this film expecting an easy viewing experience. Martyrs is not a movie on par with Hostel and other “horror porn” that uses blood and gore just to titillate. Don’t expect a happy ending in any traditional sense. While Ana may have found her measure of peace and even revenge, we the viewers don’t get off that easy. Martyrs is a movie where the pain and torture is all too real. What is just off screen may be worse than what is on, but the one screen torture is enough. It will make you wince and it will make you pray for the end. You will look for the “out” for Ana and it will not be found. Martyrs is a film that pulls no punches. The director has stated that many actresses turned this film down due to it’s content and I can easily understand why. Art is not safe and Martyrs is not a safe film. It will haunt you. It leaves you with a certain amount of ambiguity at the end, but in no way leaves you with any hope for the characters, or for any of us really.

The film received a 18+ rating in France which is akin to a NC-17 rating in the states. The rating was appealed by the film makers and cries of censorship have arisen over the decision. The French Society of Film Directors (SRF) have also asked theMinistry of Culture to re-examine the decision remarking that "this is the first time a French genre film has been threatened with such a rating." The Union of Film Journalists has also protested the rating. While Martyrs is definitely not a movie for children, it is not torture porn. It is a film with a well crafted story. A brutal and unflinching story, but never less a great story and should receive a rating that allows people to make their own choice about whether to see it or not. Not everyone will be able to stomach Martyrs, but if given the chance between the latest Saw installment, consider seeing Martyrs instead.

Martyrs stars Mylene Jampanoi and Morjane Alaoui who deserve praise for their willingness to take part in the movie. It was directed by Pascal Laugier who also directed the fantasy horror film Saint Ange and a making of documentary of The Brotherhood of the Wolf. An American remake of Martyrs is apparently in negotiation and while American remakes of foreign language films seldom if ever rival the original, at least it might bring the original to the attention of a wider audience. Take a chance and see a movie that isn’t safe and Martyrs definitely fit’s the bill. The film ends with the Greek definition of Martyrs as those who watch. Appropriate that all of us who watch this film are indeed Martyrs.

Friday the 13th

I had the misfortune to watch Friday the 13th today & the good thing about the movie was Jared Padalecki who played the character of Clay. I just love this guy. The funny thing is…Jason is everywhere when he’s required to kill anyone. He’s invincible. And he walks on foot I suppose. He doesn’t have any transport, but he can reach anywhere at all. Fine. He’s evil, so he can be anywhere. And I think instead of making horror movies, they should work on x-rated movies. Since they have the potential, they can make a lot of people happy.

Then I couldn’t help remembering this stupid movie about Jason & Freddy in which Freddy was carrying Jason’s head in the end or was it Jason carrying Freddy's head? I can't recall who it was. But what’s the point of creating such movies?
