Teens’ Unhealthy Eating Behaviors Continue into Adulthood:

Teens who engage in unhealthy and excessive weight control behaviors — such as binge eating— continue doing so into young adulthood and beyond, according to a study conducted by University of Minnesota researchers.

“The findings from the current study argue for early and ongoing efforts aimed at the prevention, early identification, and treatment of disordered eating behaviors in young people,” commented lead investigator Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.D.

Researchers examined the records for 1,030 young men and 1,257 young women using data from Project EAT-III (Eating and Activity in Teens and Young Adults), a 10-year longitudinal study developed to examine eating, activity, and weight-related factors among young people. Subjects were largely between 13 and 16 years old at the beginning of the study, and 23 to 26 years old when it ended.

Participants answered questions about dieting, extreme weight control methods such as fasting, using food replacements and skipping meals, and out-of-control binge eating. Data concerning socioeconomic, gender, age, and race/ethnicity factors was also included.

Approximately half of the females reported dieting in the past year compared to about one-fourth of the males. The occurrence of dieting stayed fairly consistent from adolescence through young adulthood for females in both age groups. Among males, the prevalence of dieting remained constant over time in the younger age group, but increased in the older group as they aged from middle adolescence to middle young adulthood.

In the younger females, unhealthy weight control behaviors remained constant from early adolescence to early young adulthood.

Among older females, these behaviors decreased significantly from middle adolescence to middle young adulthood, but still remained very high (60.7 percent compared to 54.4 percent).

Approximately one-third of males reported unhealthy weight control behaviors, which stayed fairly constant over the study period in both age groups.

For extreme behaviors, there was a significant increase from adolescence to young adulthood in females for both age groups and for the older male group. Among females, the use of extreme weight control behaviors increased from 8.4 to 20.4 percent between early adolescence and early young adulthood and from 12.6 to 20.6 percent between middle adolescence and middle young adulthood.

For the older males, extreme weight control behaviors increased from 2.1 percent in middle adolescence to 7.3 percent in middle young adulthood.

The results reveal that these potentially harmful eating control behaviors are not just a phase that adolescents experience, but instead may indicate that early dieting and disordered eating behaviors may set the stage for continued use of these methods in later life.

“Within clinical practices, dietitians and other health care providers should be asking about the use of these behaviors prior to adolescence, throughout adolescence, and into young adulthood,” noted the researchers.

“Given the growing concern about obesity, it is important to let young people know that dieting and disordered eating behaviors can be counterproductive to weight management. Young people concerned about their weight should be provided with support for healthful eating and physical activity behaviors that can be implemented on a long-term basis, and should be steered away from the use of unhealthy weight control practices.”

The study is published in the July 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

"AIDS is transmitted by semen. Until further notice, don’t swallow semen and don’t engage..."

Couldn’t do Insanity again today. The friend who supplies my Insanity fix is off celebrating her mom’s birthday, which is okay, totally and completely okay. I’m not addicted or anything. You’d be a half-brained chipmunk with limited mental faculties to think that.

Fine. I’m kind of addicted.

It’s the sweating. I’m convinced it’s the sweating; you watch the Insanity stuff and you see all these people behind Shaun effing T just drenched and you suddenly become more envious of that than their rock hard bodies. Sweat suddenly becomes your meter for gauging how well you’re working out. If I don’t sweat enough, I honestly feel like I didn’t do my best, which motivates me to move harder the next day.

Anyway, since I couldn’t work out at all, I’ve been having a ‘blah’ kind of day. I know I could go for a run or something, but my neighborhood’s filled with other runners, plus what I like to call “Active Yard Cleaner Uppers.” These are people who constantly work on their front lawns to make sure it meets specifications only they care about. It’s not just about the yard, though. Oh no. It’s also about watching other neighbors on the sly, from the corner of their eye.

I just rhymed.

So, yeah. I feel awkward running in my neighborhood. I’m planning on doing some yoga later to make up for it.

current weight: 137

goal weight: 125

It has come to my attention that what seems to be “common knowledge” isn’t so common after all. Especially when it comes to health and nutrition. With all the media garble telling us what to do, what to eat, and what to purchase, it’s hard to desipher the which eating habits are good or bad. Should I not eat carbs? Should I exercise every single day? Will this Bun Burner 300 really make my ass look good in only a month? Most of it is the media trying to convince you, the consumer, to do this and that so they can make money. That’s the hard truth. Sure, that granola bar sure looks tasty and nutritious, and the box even says “Low Fat”! But take a look at the nutrition label, and the facts are all there. Most everything is shoved with hidden gobs of sugar, chemicals, and all sorts terribly horrid things for your body. But didn’t that label say “Low Fat”? Doesnt that mean it’s good for me? You be the judge.

I didn’t always see things this way. I use to be “normal”. I use to never look at a food label except to look at the calories. I use to think I was eating healthy for many years, when really, I wasn’t looking at the big picture. After all this so-thought eating healthy, yet still feeling like it wasn’t working, I asked myself “what is it I’m doing wrong”. And after many tiny discoveries over the months, it hit me- I didn’t know what exactly I was putting into my mouth, and ultimately, my body. After researching, reading, and marching through grocery stores staring at food labels, I felt empowered knowing what I was eating, and what exactly my body needs to carry me on.

That is why I am here, now, to set the facts straight. After all I’ve learned, I feel everybody should know what they need to find happiness within themselves. Everybody deserves to be happy with themselves; every day, morning, noon, and night. Your body is your shell, your home, the one thing that will stick with you- but you have to love it and take care of it for it to do the same.

I feel disgustingggggg

I ate like, four slices of white bread because I was in one of my bread-withdrawal moods (do y’all ever get those…?). And now my body feels horrible. I foresee some quality time with my toilet bowl tonight.

what a long day i have ahead of me today. at least i started my day off right and went running. i didn’t really have to BRING myself to do it, the rain just makes me sleepy. my run was very nice. it wasn’t really a work out, more like leisure running. i’m surprised it only took me 15 minutes to do my entire route, which means i should probably step it up and do it twice, or find somewhere else to run. i want to be in better shape and in order to do so, i need to start pushing myself a little harder.

another thing. I don’t understand why people sign up for gym memberships..? unless you live in the city where you’re fearing that you’re going to be kidnapped if you go outside, i don’t understand why you wouldn’t just run down your street (with your dog) or at a park or something. Night time is a different story. 24 hour gyms are convenient i guess if you work late and need something to do before you go to bed. i don’t fucking know.

“Being outdoors for part of the day helps reset circadian rhythms and balances hormones and promotes weight loss.”

Antibiotic resistance has finally made its way onto the Senate radar again and with good reason considering that we’ve seen antibiotic resistance across British farms and this year in US hospitals and nursing homes to name just a few. It’s a problem that’s only getting worse with the expanded overuse of antibiotics. It’s this practice that a Senate bill is looking to limit with the re-introduction of The Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA).

According to Diane Feinstein (D-CA), the primary sponsor for PAMTA, reported on Civil Eats. “[t]he effectiveness of antibiotics for humans is jeopardized when they are used to fatten healthy pigs or speed the growth of chickens. This is a basic food safety initiative that would phase out the misuse of these drugs so that food in supermarkets across America will not spread strains of drug-resistant bacteria.”

According to the FDA, 80 percent of the antibiotics produced in this country are used in animal agriculture. This amount is estimated to be more than four times the amount of drugs used to treat human illness.

The bill, which Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Jack Reed (D-RI), and Barbara Boxer (D-CA), all have worked together on was outlined by Civil Eats and does the following:

  • Phases out the non-therapeutic use of medically important antibiotics in livestock;
  • Requires new applications for animal antibiotics to demonstrate the use of the antibiotic will not endanger public health;
  • Does not restrict the use of antibiotics to treat sick livestock or to treat pets.

This needs to happen…

The back issues resurface when I lay down, meaning (since I toss and turn a lot during the night) every time I move I wake up.

Also, the problem where my thumb falls asleep and then hurts like a motherfucker is still happening.

Basically, every hour or so that I try to sleep, I get jerked awake by a charlie horse in my hand and a stabbing pain in my right hip.

I AM TWENTY-TWO THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING TO ME

Fat Head » The USDA Explains ‘My Plate’:

Yeah.

Honestly, the media had no influence in my weight loss. Credits for motivation goes all to myself. ;)

Because I workout a lot, I’m constantly starving. There’s a plate I finished like an hour ago sitting next to me and I could have another meal right now.

Make sure you’re eating 5 small meals and they’re well rounded with tons of protein. If you’re just eating fast burn carbs (white bread and such) you’re not filling yourself up well. Go for whole grains, organic peanut butter, fish and lean meats, and eggs.

Hahahahaha this video is so corny.

Fatty acids.

Fatty acids make pretty much everything function properly in your body

Everything !

Cell function

Hormones

Immune system

Digestive system

Everything!

And without fatty acids the nutrients can’t even get into your cells (which is where the need to be in case you didn’t know)

You find the proper fatty acids in polyunsaturated oils.

I eat avocados on a regular basis. I really shouldn’t eat them so much but I like them on everything. Avocados are high in polyunsaturated oils.

I also eat fish and olives and egg yolks.

Ok everyone wants to know what I eat. Well here is something I love to make yyuuummm!!!

—Fried potatoes, fried lightly in grape seed oil… (I will research whether that’s bad or not and get back to you)

—sliced fresh organic avocado (like a whole avocado)

—and topped with fried eggs friend in vegan butter

Just mix it up in a bowl and eat it with Tabasco sauce!!!! So freakin good!

Here’s where it gets nasty!

This is when the American obesity epidemic began in the 70’s.

When marketing comes into play!

When they started hydrogenating our oils

Food producers take these oils and heat em up and let hydrogen bubbles pass through it. This makes the oil hydrogenated. If you full hydrogenate it, it becomes a solid fat that has crazy high levels of Trans fats.  If you partially hydrogenate its pretty much “Trans fat butter stuff”. Instead of a solid.  And IT’S CHEAPER!!!

Trans Fat Will Kill You!!

Just like smoking, it’s a poison you’re putting in your body, but you’re going to have to pay for a larger coffin

Remember how I said fatty acids make it possible for nutrients to get in your body? Well, when you replace those essential fatty acids with trans fat, it messes that shit up!
Your cells start blocking out all the good stuff and not preventing the bad stuff from coming in! This is all bad!

And when your body is hungry for those fatty acids you’re eating something else. Thus you stay hungry and just keep eating hydrogenated foods. Its so simple how it works and it should be considered common sense!

If you want to lose weight and still eat hydrogenated oils, you’re crazy.

You need large amounts of fatty acids

You get fat because hydrogenated soy bean oil (usually what they use) depresses the thyroid. So you have no energy and you don’t want to exercise

Trans fat is in everything!!

START FLIPPIN PACKAGES AND READING LABELS

I seriously can’t give you a list of things it would be way too long. Just start looking for yourself and you will be amazed.

Fast food is the epitome of trans fat!

Fry foods in coconut oil. It burns fat as energy instead of storing it.

Some oils if you fry in them, it’s the same as hydrogenating it. Like vegetable oil and olive oil.

The worst of the worst comes from fast food! Why do you think everything is so cheap?!

Oh and be careful because food companies disguise hydrogenated oils as Mono- and Di – Glycerides

When you are hydrogenated, you can’t avoid being overweight and having bad skin and overall bad health!

We do everything possible to be beautiful, none of that is ever going to matter if you’re consuming hydrogenated oils

NON-HYDROGENATED!

Smart and beautiful forever

basically… cause I’m freaking out, I’m okay, like, they are managing my symptoms. ...

Great workout with cardio, and a day full of walking. Had a little pistachio gelato after dinner, but other than that good day.

This week was my birthday “week,” which turned into many parties along with tons of food and alcohol. I’m counting this as my rest “week.” I guess I deserved it(; And the best thing is, I don’t feel that guilty… just a little. Back on track tomorrow(:

Last night I had pb&j oatmeal and this morning I had it with smart balance butter and salt. A warm bowl of oatmeal was always a comfort in the winter, but I forget how incredibly filling and good for you it is. I would have sworn by oatmeal as my key to weight loss. So I’m gonna start eating it more and making and finding different recipes to use it with - sweet and savory.

Also, I tried quinoa last night at my boyfriend’s. It’s DELICIOUS (and sort of a lot like oatmeal.) I need to get me some of that too.

reason to be happy #1192

I am sooo happy. First goal achieved! I feel fearless!

Now I am determined to lose 2lbs a week. That will put me hitting my UGW before I start the next semester. Everyone will be like WOW, and I will be smiling.

I will work hard. I will do this. I will be healthy and fit.

Fucking. Cereal.

So last month I hit the gym pretty hard (for me at least .I usually go 3 times a week for an hour sometimes longer ) and was seeing zero result along with my usual life stresses, not seeing results was adding too it! I was frustrated about it on a daily basis, for most of the day . I decided to relax and not worry about the numbers on the scale and just enjoy the feeling I get from it . The result: dropped 3 pounds in a week and started actually noticing a firmer body(yay). I notice when I’m not constantly worrying about it is when I see results this article reminded me of that.

Chopping the Flax Seeds

Perfect bushel for a snack

It may be tiny, but it’s mighty: The flax seed carries one of the biggest nutrient payloads on the planet. And while it’s not technically a grain, it has a similar vitamin and mineral profile to grains, while the amount of fiber, antioxidants, and Omega-3 fatty acids in flax leaves grains in the dust.

Additionally, flax seed is very low in carbohydrates, making it ideal for people who limit their intake of starches and sugars. And its combination of healthy fat and high fiber content make it a great food for weight loss and maintenance - many dieters have found that flax seed has been a key to keeping them feeling satisfied.“

- Flax Seed: The Low Carb Whole Grain - About.com

I have recently added this amazing little seed into my diet! I put them in my egg-white omelet this morning but they are also great mixed in with yogurt or cereal.

Ideally they should be ground up first before consuming because the real nutrients are found inside. I would use a food processor - but sadly I don’t have one. So for now its an extremely sharp blade and spice board for me.

Also, flax seeds are best for you if they are toasted first (or if you are cooking something warm like an omelet you can just throw them inside).

here is a link to more tips about flax seeds. Also these are some recipes and “mix-in” ideas you can try.

Today I tried extra-hard to have a healthy diet, and do some exercise! I was able to use my friend’s Wii-fit, and did some yoga, muscle workout and aerobic exercises. Really enjoyed the boxing!

Breakfast: Special K with blueberries.

Lunch: 2 Tortialla Wraps with salad, low-fat cottage cheese, salmon and low-fat hummus. 1 Apple.

Dinner: Grilled chicken with baby potatoes and peas.

Snack: Low-fat hummus.

Exercise: 28 minutes on the Wii-Fit.

why? they’re low in calories, have enough fiber to give you that “full” feeling, are a good source of vitamin C, and help prevent many diseases. in fact, on multiple websites, i have come across apples as a “power food!”

what else are apples good for?

  • pectin (a complex carb in plants’ cell walls) - helps to draw out cholesterol in the bloodstream, while also evening out blood sugar levels
  • boron - strengthens bones
  • antioxidants - lower risks of asthma and cancer
  • said to aid in preventing degeneration of the eyes and brain
  • mild acidity - cleanse and brighten teeth

TIP: set one day of the week and make that the begining week day. It could be a sunday which tends to work for most but i start my week every monday morning. Make it a goal to weigh less each “start day” buy recording your weight. Also pick a time to weight yourself! i do it once i wake up but yours might be a few hrs after dinner or breakfast doesnt matter

This will help you to see when you gained weight and you can also look back on that week if you did gain and say why… or if you sheded a pound or two you can ask yourself what did i do this week and how can i keep it up.

Happy tracking :)

I can’t go 24 hours without a food binge. I do this when I’m bored. When I’m at home alone with nothing to do (or nothing that I want to do) I binge. I just ate probably 5 cups of cereal. No joke. At least I worked out today.

No more eating for the rest of the day. Going to try and go to bed around 8. Tired right now

What do you think?

Sorry! I just realised something!

I promised AGES ago that I would post a healthy diet plan I learned from my nursing class when looking after weaker patients with malnutrition and weight problems (due to prolonged bed rest/hospital stays).

I got totally carried away with the blog, forgot due to stress and exams & moving out.

But it’s all taken care of. I’ll organize all my info and get it on here as soon as I can.

Sorry again!

I feel like I’m starting over on this journey.
You probably have guessed that this last week was horrible for it,

Either way. It’s new me, a new state of mind and new strength.
The twenty year old me is going to be what the teenage me always wanted.
I told you guys I would do this, and I will.
One step at a time. And it started today again at the gym.

809 Calories Yesterday

I only ate once, but I had a few friends over to the house and we drank rum and cokes so that kinda was what made my day a kinda-bust on the calorie intake.

Breakfast

  • 2.3 cups Kashi Autumn Wheat-405 calories
  • 1.1 cup Silk Vanilla Soy Milk-79 calories
  • 1 cup strawberries-49 calories

Drinky Time

  • 22.5 oz Coke (this is an estimate cause I just kept topping off my drink so it wouldnt taste strong)  -270 calories
  • 2.3 oz Captain Morgan Rum-135 calories

Exercise

I worked from 5 til 8, so I was pretty much just walking around and standing for 3 hours, although when I logged the walking in MyFitnessPal I told it I only walked for 1 hr because I like to underestimate my calories lost, that way It will motivate me to do a lil more exercise :)

Eat Right for Short Workouts

I found this in an article out of men’s health magazine.

If you’re exercising for an hour or less, you don’t need to make special dietary accommodations. But you do need fuel to sustain yourself. Lowery recommends eating a simple meal with at least 200 calories, 20 grams of protein, and 30 grams of carbs an hour or two before your workout. A simple grilled-chicken sandwich will set you up.

Tip Of the Day! Dining Out.

Going out to dinner can be tough.  You don’t want to go to a great restaurant with someone special or friends and order a salad. No worries just keep it simple!

-First off SKIP THE FREE BREAD! If you can’t say no limit yourself to one piece (that is what I try to do)

-I love appetizers as much as the next person but skip chowders and deep fried finger food.  Go with tortilla chips and guacamole and/or salsa.

-Pick a protein that is grilled not fried.

-Choose fresh salsas to top your meat with not heavy cream sauces.

-Substitute a side salad for fries!

-If you can’t resist the dessert menu choose something to share with the others at the table!

Cheers

Benefits of Yogurt

Overview

The genesis of yogurt began in about 5,000 B.C. when milk accidentally curdled in the sun. The resulting fermented milk product became yogurt, a staple in today’s health food market that provides the nutritional benefits of milk, along with the added benefits of bacteria cultures that support digestive health.

Probiotics

The yogurt-making process involves adding cultures that develop into beneficial bacteria during fermentation. Beneficial bacteria, including the well-publicized Lactobacillis acidophilus, are microbes that exist naturally in the intestines. Eating yogurt adds more healthy bacteria that produce vitamins, digest insoluble fiber and provide the enzymes necessary for milk digestion.

Protein

A 4-oz. serving of plain low fat yogurt provides 5.9 g of protein, or 12 percent of the 50 mg FDA daily value. Combining yogurt with fruit and cereal is a healthy snack because it provides protein, carbohydrates and fat the body needs to function. Protein derived from saturated-fat free sources eliminates the risk of clogged arteries.

Minerals

The calcium content in 4 oz. of plain yogurt is 207 mg, or 21 percent of the 1,000 FDA daily value. It also contains 1 mg of zinc, 7 percent of the 15 mg DV. Calcium is particularly important for maintaining healthy bone density. Zinc plays a supporting role in the maintenance of bone health. It also promotes wound healing.

Calories

The calorie content in 4 oz. of plain low-fat yogurt is 71 calories, or 4 percent of a standard 2,000-calorie diet. Plain yogurt is often used in place of sour cream as a topping for soups, baked potatoes, Indian food and a mixer for vegetable dips and spreads. It contains about half of the calorie content of reduced fat sour cream.

Okay yall! I’m so excited! I re-began my ‘healthy for life’ movement. I know I’ve been loafing ALL school year long about getting in shape, but something about summer coming up and college in the fall has really pushed me to get back on track.

I’m getting my vegetarian life style back in order, I was definitely way more strict about it when I first started 4-5 years ago. I’m also really watching my calorie intake and serving sizes and food portions. I’m also trying to get myself in the habit of doing a few exercises when I wake up and before I go to sleep, plus I want to be more serious with my yoga - to gain flexibility and have a healthy mind as well as body. (I got overweight this school year because I didn’t actively play sports and stressing lead me to eat unhealthily, as well *sadface*)

I’ve struggled with how I was going to go about losing my unwanted weight and it has been a battle as I debated on doing it the unhealthy way or not. I’ve been using other tumblr blogs as my motivation, suprisingly not all thinspirations are proana or promia or even ED related. I really didn’t want to fall back down that path.

Right now I’m privately keeping track of my CW, GWs, and UGW but I think posting a before picture up here will be a great motivator for me so that I can do a before and after. Man, yall don’t even know how excited I am! I’ve been studying nutrition and calories online for a few days and I’m excited to use it to my creativity. Especially during this month of June. I won’t be doing too much physical activity because my hair cannot handle it lol, but I really am watching what I eat. I also struggle with putting myself down when I relapse and binge and I’m also pretty lazy so I purge unintentionally. My biggest struggle: water intake! I love water but I’m not drinking nearly as much as I’m suppose to.

Okay, so last, my support team during this process is my friend Britt, she really understands the pressure of being fit, since she is a dancer, and I myself am an athlete. So she will be my rock. I wanna get other people hip like my best friend, since she’ll be abroad throughout the month of June and me and her have never discussed my insecurity, and my sister since she knows a lot about foods and seems to be tryna get in shape as well. My overweightness (not even a word lol) doesn’t show to the general public. I personally know I’m 30ish lbs over and I intend to lose 40ish lbs by August. So if any of yall are in the same situation please hit me up and we can support each other. Or if you just have any tips on health, yoga, working out, or nutrition please let me know. Thanks :)

Spinach Dip.

So guilty. So good.

BUT. 2 tbsp of it are 70 calories and totally worth it with a bunch of baby carrots. 7g of fat is a bit hefty, but you know how I like dietary fat for weight loss. I only wish it had a liiiittle less sodium. But if it makes me eat more veggies, whatever!
